After reading the posting about the lack of awareness of some non-veg people I'm reminded of how fortunate I am to have the people/groups in my life. I belong to three veg Meetup groups (one raw/livew/ 400 members) and an organization called Healthy Planet. It's an environmental/educational organization that seeks to educate about the effects our diet has on the environment, animals, etc. It isn't a vegan organization, but the potlucks are vegan (and delicious). The director Bob educates in a non-judgmental way (presenting health/environmental information an allowing people to progress at their speed. My church (Catholic) is not eco/liberal per se but we have a mission statement ending with "all are welcome in this parish."
Becoming vegan today is much easier than even 10 years ago. The
Internet is a huge asset and networking tool. Later on today I'm
going to a restaurant, Three Brothers Pizza that has a vegan menu w/all the traditional fare (seitan, tofu
parmesan, pizza and vegan
desserts that equal if not surpass non-vegan desserts).
I can remember when I was contemplating becoming vegan and all the
things I would be giving up and the possible social problems. The
transition was challenging in that I had to learn to eat differently
and look at food differently(and where it comes from). I don't feel
I'm deprived of anything and it's one of the best things I've done. I
hope all who are having difficulty find peace and patience and seek
God's guidance especially on this Pentecost Sunday.
