University of Oklahoma president says Baboon Program to end
By, September 8, 2015

University of Oklahoma President David Boren says a Baboon Program at the OU Health Sciences Center that has drawn criticism from animal rights groups is ending.

Boren said Tuesday that the program will wind down over the next three to four years. Boren says he decided to end the program following an internal review that began after several deaths of young baboons were reported at a baboon breeding facility in El Reno.

James Tomasek, a spokesman for the program, says the center is working with the National Institutes of Health on a transition plan that will honor existing contractual obligations and ensure that current biomedical research projects are completed.

Tomasek says similar programs have enabled medical advances to alleviate human disease and suffering, such as vaccine development for infectious diseases.
