A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Fear – 30 December 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

Yesterday I wrote about the Y2K fears that were exploited by some Christian leaders; and how fear, which is the opposite of love, is counter to God’s teachings.

1 John 4:18:

18. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love.
~ New American Standard Bible

Then, it stands to reason that the people who believed the scare stories and continue to be led by such manipulative leaders are not emulating Jesus. Rather, in their fearful cowardice they choose to emulate people who are false prophets, rather than God.

Even though they may profess to be followers – disciples – of Jesus, their actions prove otherwise.

John 8:31-32

31. Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.

32. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
~ New King James Version

2 Timothy 1:7

7. For God did not give us a spirit of timidity – of cowardice, of craven and cringing and fawning fear – but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of calm and well-balanced mind and discipline and self-control.
~ The Amplified Bible
