"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Shark Oil or Snake Oil? - 7 Mar 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

The other day, I received an unsolicited sample of moisturizer containing squalane (squalene) in the mail from one of those modern, slick, “snake oil” sales people, who happens to be a woman medical doctor.

Hidden among a lot of spin touting this product as a “natural ocean secret” etc. (Funny how the word “natural” sells all kinds of garbage from cruelly derived ingredients!) is the prideful admission that it comes from deep-water sharks. Right there, that really ticked me off! I was so thoroughly disgusted that I threw the sample along with all the slick waste-of-paper into the garbage. I should mention that a warning appears in teeny tiny print at the very bottom of a sales spin page: “Any person with a known allergy to fish products should consult a health professional prior to application of this product.”

Just for the heck of it, I looked up “squalane” on the Internet. All I can say is that there must be a lot of unfeeling, cold-hearted suckers out there buying the products of depraved manufacturers out to make a buck using parts of animals who are just going about their lives. And for what? Vanity!

One of the websites (that gave me a little hope!) mentioned under the heading of “Toxicology” that squalane is a skin, eye and respiratory irritant that may be harmful, and that it has not been fully investigated. And under the heading of “Personal Protection” were the words: “Safety Glasses.”

As I’ve mentioned before in an earlier Blog, my mother died at age 103 with beautiful skin, and she never used face creams, moisturizers, etc. and never had cosmetic surgery. (The funeral director told us that he had never seen such perfect skin, even on much younger people.)
