Dear Marilyn:

We need to remember that Abram (Abraham) brought the sacrificial system with him from Babylon (Ur), and all the sacrifices that we see in the Bible at this time are from there and not from God.

God most likely tempted Abraham in this way about Isaac because He was trying to show Him the futility of sacrifice, and only gave him a ram because Abraham was intent on killing. God never wants sacrifice; He wants obedience and compassion.

If you look at Jesusí discussion about marriage and divorce in Matthew, we see that Moses permitted it because of the hardness of heart of the people, we believe that same thing applies to these rituals set forth by Moses, for they are counter to the heavenly will of God.
