Commentary on Genesis 9:2-4
By Frank and Mary Hoffman - 27 Oct 2009

Dear Davida:

From what you write, you seem to be a Messianic Jew, like I (Frank) am. Is that correct?

There are several things that we need to take into consideration:

One is the difference between God's heavenly and creation intent, and that of the fallen world we live in. We should be living in the will rather than the concessions He allows.

The second is that the entire eating of flesh and the sacrificial system are all part of the concession to try to bring sinful human beings back into the will of God. If we remained obedient to God, their would have been no need for a sacrifice or for Jesus.

The third is that the rebuilding of the temple and continued sacrificing of animals is an attempt by sinful humanity to appease God, when all the Lord wants is our obedience and not sacrifice. And, we believe that all of this will take place before Messiah comes (returns). Once He rules upon the earth, there will be no killing.

We don't believe that it is proper to kill any other living being, since God created us all as living souls (neh-fesh khah-yaw). As a result, we have been vegan for the past 23 years.

The feasts may still be observed after the Lord reigns upon the earth, but they will be celebrated without killing any animals, and several Jewish sects did around the time of Jesus.

In the Bible section of our web site, you may be interested in reading our paper on Living in the Will Rather than the Concessions of God.

We look forward to hearing back from you and discussing more about 'a highly mature pursuit of truth'.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
