1. CVA Booklet Reprint

We will be reprinting our “Joyful, Compassionate Eating” booklet soon. If you have any comments or suggestions for changes, please send to cva@christianveg.org.

2. Upcoming Activist Opportunities

Leafleting and tabling are effective, enjoyable ways to show our brothers and sisters in Christ that a plant-based diet is good for God’s Creation. When you volunteer for the CVA, the CVA donates $20/hr. to the veg. or animal protection group of your choice. In particular, we’ve found that Winter Jam is a great opportunity to reach a lot of young people who are very receptive to our message.

3. Original Sin, part 14

Many Christians link Jesus’ death with Original Sin. This generally relates to the theory articulated by Anselm of Canterbury, who argued for “substitutionary atonement theory.” Anselm held that Adam’s “original sin” of disobedience is transmitted to all humanity and manifests itself as the general sinfulness of humankind. Nobody deserves eternal salvation and everlasting life with God in heaven because everyone carries sin. The ancient Hebrews believed that sacrifices were necessary to cleanse people of sin. However, no sacrifice was pure or great enough to relieve humans of original sin. Anselm argued that Jesus, as God incarnate, was without sin. His death on the cross constituted a divinely ordained, perfect sacrifice that saved all humanity.

There are difficulties with this theory. In the Hebrew Scriptures a person chooses the sacrificial victim, and the atonement for sins was mediated by a priest who, they believed, had a special relationship with God. The death of Jesus was very different. He was falsely accused of crimes and was then killed by secular Roman authorities. If the Romans were responsible for Jesus’ death, it would seem to make little sense that an unjust, secular proceeding could be crucial to a divine plan to save humanity.

Perhaps responsibility for Jesus’ death lies elsewhere. We will consider other possibilities next week.

4. The November Issue of “The Peaceable Table” Is Now Online

Contents include:

In a moving Editor's Corner Guest Essay, PT supporter Patricia Anne describes a vigil she attended outside a Farmer John slaughterhell on October 2, Gandhi's birthday and World Day for Farm Animals. She and the other vigil participants offered water and love to pigs being trucked in to their deaths.

One of the Unset Gems, a quotation from Albert Schweitzer, asserts that people are truly ethical only when all life, not just human life, is sacred to them.

A Letter from Marian Hussenbux comments on the Pioneer essay on the remarkable abolitionist Benjamin Lay, featured in last month's issue.

Documentary film What the Health, Reviewed in this issue, deals with the power of a (vegan) whole plant food diet to improve or restore health lost to major lifestyle-linked diseases, and the refusal of representatives of large research organizations such as the American Diabetes Association to discuss the subject.

Whether you have Indian food often or seldom, you'll like the Lentil Dal Recipe in this month's issue.
