2. Commentary by
Paul Hansen
I’ve been thinking lately about a series of
questions I might ask people who empathize with animals that would
reveal the inconsistency of objecting to “animal cruelty” on the one
hand, while patronizing those who are guilty of it on the other.
Here’s what I’ve come up with tentatively:
(1) If you knew
that a certain veterinarian was regularly cruel to animals, would you
patronize him?
[expected answer: No]
(2) If you knew that a certain business was regularly cruel to
animals, would you patronize it?
[expected
answer: No]
(3) Then why do you patronize the
factory-farm/slaughterhouse business?
To resolve the paradox,
they would have to either differentiate the sense of “companion
animals” (in 1) from the sense of “farm animals” (in 2) and justify
treating them differently, or claim they weren’t aware that factory
farms/slaughterhouses regularly engaged in cruelty. If the latter, I
could ask if they would like to see what “standard business practice”
was like and lend them a copy of the 12-minute video, “Farm to Fridge”
(available from Mercy for Animals and viewable online at
MeatVideo.com):

One lady in
our church, who was leery about watching “FOOD Inc.”, flatly declared,
“I don’t want to change my eating habits, so I don’t care to watch any
disturbing undercover video.” I find this reaction surprisingly common
among meat-eating Christians. Ignorance is less repulsive and more
comfortable.
