1. Revised CVA Booklet

We are pleased to announce the printing of a revised CVA booklet. Formerly titled “Are We good Stewards of God’s Creation,” the new booklet is titled “Would Jesus Eat Today?” and the subtitle reads Perhaps not. Here’s why. There have been several other changes, but overall it’s very similar to the old booklet.

To see it, go to www.christianveg.org/honoring.htm .

2. Activist Feedback

Casey, who leafleted on public property at Lakewood Church (the biggest church in the country) in Houston, writes:

1200 Would Jesus Eat Meat Today?

900 Even if You Like Meat (Vegan Outreach booklet)

600 Compassionate Choices (Vegan Outreach booklet)

I dressed all preppy to leaflet the 8:30am and 11:00am, masses trickling in and herding out, as well as the smaller 1:30pm Spanish session arrivals. There were lots of late arrivals and some other activities between sessions, so I had a pretty constant flow the entire time. I got some good feedback. Typically I offered 1-2 booklets per family, older people I mostly gave CVA booklets and teens or young adults CC or EI.

The reason we can leaflet here is that the parking garage and old stadium are on a street, which is now blocked off, but we can stand in the street right by the main entrance/exit. My opening line was mostly "Help Stop the Violence," which raised a few eyebrows and interest.

3. Commentary on the Lectionary: Fish Stories

April 18, John 21:1-19

I am indebted to Rev. Frank Hoffman for helpful insights into this week’s comments. As Rev. Hoffman has noted, Jesus might have been referring to the fish when he asked Peter, “Do you love me more than these?” (John 21:15). When Peter affirmed his love, Jesus replied, “Feed my lambs.” We may recall that Peter had been fishing when Jesus called him to become a “fisher of men” (Matthew 4:19; Mark 1:17). According to this interpretation, John 21 describes Jesus asking Peter whether Peter preferred to catch fish or to be a disciple. Jesus had called Peter away from fishing toward a ministry that involved reconciling all God’s creation.

Prior to this exchange with Peter, Jesus demonstrated his divinity by miraculously assisting the disciples in catching fish (John 21:6). Did Jesus not care about the fish? If Jesus killed fish in order to save people, then in essence he was sacrificing one group of innocent individuals, the fish, for others, his disciples. Even if one did not place a high value on fish, they are living, feeling creatures, and their destruction would seem to contradict the notion that Jesus had a non-sacrificial ministry. However, this was a miracle story, and consequently one may envision the miracle consisting of God creating fish as food, in which case there was no need for the fish to have the capacity to feel pain as normal fish do. By analogy, God created manna and dead quail for the Hebrews in the desert.
