1. Wake Up Weekend 2009 conference
CVA member Ben DeVries will be giving two presentations at the Wake
Up Weekend 2009 conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jan. 23-24.
The event is coordinated by Matt Halteman, who has written some great
articles on Christianity and animal protectionism. Ben will give one of
five presentations from 2:30-5:00 in the Commons Annex Lecture Hall at
Calvin College on Friday, Jan. 23.
Then, on Jan. 24, he will give a presentation from 1:30-2:30 in a
room called 106 S. Division entitled “Not One Sparrow is Forgotten: a
Simply Christian Animal Advocacy.”
The conference is free, and there is a $10-at-the-door brunch on
Saturday.

2. Activist Feedback
Michele, leafleting at the Anberlin concert in Asheville, North
Carolina, writes: The concert drew people from different states. I
shared almost a whole box of CVA booklets [300]. Sometimes I would ask
if anyone was vegan, and to those that replied positively a few agreed
to take and share the CVA vegan booklet with others. That positive
response was gladdening. I think that it is great to have the
opportunity to help make things on Earth as it is in Heaven.

3. Contents of the January issue of The Peaceable
Table include
* Our Guest Editorial, "Rambo the Sheep: My Greatest Teacher" is by
the founder and director of Catskill Animal Sanctuary (CAS), Kathy
Stevens. Because Rambo, an abused sheep rescued by CAS, was so
aggressive, a sheep breeder urged Stevens to have him euthanized. But
Stevens wanted to "try what love can do." Rambo was to give her the
biggest and most wonderful surprise of her life.
* Is soy a health food or is it dangerous for us? One of the
NewsNotes steers us to helpful information about this sometimes
confusing issue.
* The Recipe for Chocolate Cream Pie by Angela Suarez is great for
welcoming in the new year.
* The Pilgrimage story is by history professor Barbara Booth, who
with her husband shares a house with eight tangible cats
and--apparently--a ghost cat.
* January's Pioneer is novelist Brigid Brophy, sometimes called a
"literary shrew," who shows a remarkably caring side.
