Re: "Is Compassion Only Human?"
In response to an article in the Take Heart! issue of August 14th
titled “Is Compassion only Human?” some of you wrote back and shared
your opinion with us:
“I firmly believe that animals are much more complex than many people
think. I have observed similar behavior when cats of mine have died. I
once dug a grave and buried my cat who I found dead on Christmas morning
while his (unrelated) feline companion sat quietly by the grave
throughout the whole process and ritual. Afterward, she grieved for
days. I actually believe that animals are superior to humans in many
ways - one being that as far as I can tell, they don't sin.” ~ Scott
Cheryl Dare certainly believes that compassion is found in animals as
well. She recommends some books on the subject: “When Elephants Weep:
The Emotional Lives of Animals” (Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson and Susan
McCarthy) and “Beauty in the Beasts: True Stories of Animals Who Choose
to Do Good” (Kristin von Kreisler) among many others.
“I have no doubts that animals are able to express compassion. If we
paid more attention to other species, we would discover that animals are
very complex creatures whom we greatly underestimate. As long as humans
keep blindly believing that animals are so simple and primitive, we will
continue to exploit them for our benefit.” ~ CVA sustaining member
