1. Why Daniel’s Fast Works
Most
people want to be healthy and in order to be healthy we should strive
to stay within a normal range of weight. Pastor Rick Warren has
encouraged his congregation to lose a lot of weight and get healthier
by adopting Daniel’s Fast, based on the biblical story told in the
book of Daniel. In the story, Daniel refuses the rich foods the King
was offering him and instead chooses vegetables, and ends up healthier
and stronger than those who ate the King’s food laden with animal
products.

I think the Bible is clear that God’s ideal diet for us is a
plant-based diet whenever possible. After all, the book of Genesis
tells us that God prescribed a vegan diet to Adam and Eve. As stewards
of our bodies, temples of the Holy Spirit, doing our best to stay
healthy while showing compassion and love to other creatures is a
great way to honor God and celebrate Creation!
2. This Week’s
Famous Quote
"Animals do not 'give' their life to us, as the
sugar-coated lie would have it. No, we take their lives. They struggle
and fight to the last breath, just as we would do if we were in their
place."
~ John Robbins, author of many best-sellers
including Diet for a New America
3. Protein Content of Vegetables vs.
Animal Flesh
This is a very informational chart about the
protein content of various green vegetables vs. meat. It shows that
the human body can obtain enough protein easily from a plant-based
diet, without the saturated fat and cholesterol found in meat.

4.
This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Isaiah 11:6
"The wolf
shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the
kid, and the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little
child shall lead them."
Isaiah's prophecy of a peaceable
kingdom helps us envision the world that we, advocates of God's
Creation, are working tirelessly to create: a world where the
God-given rights of all creatures are respected and honored; and where
love, joy and peace rule.
5. Get Calcium from Plant-Based
Foods!
A new study published this week in the online edition
of the British journal “Heart” indicated that getting calcium from
pills could raise the risk of heart disease. Seemingly, the best and
safer sources of calcium are plant-based, such as tofu, collard greens
and kale.

It should
be of no surprise that God’s ideal diet for us, a plant-based diet
from whole foods, is the most beneficial for us. Although it might
seem very convenient to pop a pill instead of planning a balanced
diet, the reality is that we might be doing more harm than good. Being
good stewards of our bodies requires us to invest time and care in
staying healthy and celebrating the gift of life!
