1.
Ecocide
Ecocide is defined as the extensive destruction,
damage to or loss of ecosystem(s) of a given territory, whether by
human agency or by other causes, to such an extent that peaceful
enjoyment by the inhabitants of that territory has been severely
diminished. Polly Higgins, lawyer and environmental activist believes
that ecocide should be treated as a war crime.

Indeed, the destruction of ecosystems invariably affects us all,
especially the generations to come. Being mindful about our choices is
essential in order to live a life aligned to our faith, values and
beliefs. And undoubtedly, the choice of diet is of paramount
importance. Plant-based diets are the only sustainable way to feed
everyone while living in communion on Earth.
2. This Week’s
Famous Quote
If all mankind were to
disappear, the world would regenerate back to the rich state of
equilibrium that existed ten thousand years ago. If insects were to
vanish, the environment would collapse into chaos.
- Edward Osborne Wilson (1929 to
present), American biologist, researcher, theorist, naturalist,
conservationist and author.
3. Eat Less Meat to Save the
Planet
More and more evidence points to the probably most
effective solution to curb global warming: eating less or no meat. As
the article points out, farmed animals are human inventions, just like
cars, in the sense that every molecule of CO2 they produce adds to the
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that were not there before
pre-industrial times. Adding to the problem is that the increasing
demand for animal products also increases the demand for oil thus
raising the price of it.

We are at a
critical point were the environment might not be able to buffer so
much irresponsibility and carelessness on humanity’s part. We live on
Earth… our only home… there’s really not a plan B. Doesn’t it makes
sense then to keep the planet clean, healthy and harmonious? A
plant-based diet is a key piece that enables us to do just that.
4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Hebrews 13:3
“Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them; and
those who are ill-treated, since you also are in the body.”
Farmed animals are our prisoners. They cannot escape suffering and
death in our hands. They are ill-treated on a daily bases, unable to
even express their most basic God-given instincts and drives. When
they suffer, we suffer. We reap what we sow.
5. As Simple As
Eating Less Meat
Once again, Mark Bittman does a fantastic job
at explaining why most of the environmental problems plaguing our
world can be solved by something as easy as eating less meat. He
rightly points out that animal agriculture is the driving force behind
global warming, hunger, deforestation, soil degradation and pollution.

What a privilege it is to be stewards
of God’s Creation! We can easily be agents of change, healing and
restoration by adopting a plant-based diet. The answer to most of the
human problems is simple: to reflect God’s love onto all Creation.

In this TED talk Jonathan Foley
shows how agriculture and land use are devastating to the environment.
He also warns the challenge of feeding 9 billion people in the not so
far future. Please visit
