1. What
is a “Daniel Fast”?
Many churches around the U.S. are
encouraging their congregations to try a "Daniel Fast" for 21 days.
This fast is based on the account of Daniel, the biblical character
who chose to eat a plant-based diet while imprisoned to avoid
violating Jewish customs, and who after ten days was healthier and
stronger than those who ate regular food with animal ingredients. A
Daniel Fast consists of whole grains, fruits, beans, nuts and
vegetables; and according to Richard Bloomer, interim chair of Health
Sport Sciences at the University of Memphis, who followed 13 men and
30 women for 21 days, this diet decreases the risk factors for
cardiovascular disease and metabolic diseases such as stroke and
diabetes. To read the article please visit

What many
consider a fast to be done for a few weeks seems to be the way God
intended for us to eat on a daily basis according to the book of
Genesis. A well-balanced plant-based diet helps take care of our
bodies, and it certainly consists of such an abundant variety of
delicious foods that people who adopt it would not feel deprived of
anything!
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with
men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.
~
Immanuel Kant (1724 –1804), German philosopher
3. PCRM
Billboards Warn About Cheese
The Physicians Committee for
Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is using billboards through Albany, NY to
raise awareness about the link between obesity and cheese intake. PCRM
wants the Albany city school district to cut cheese from its lunch
menu, which is loaded with it. One in three students in New York is
overweight or obese.

Cheese is high in
saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein, which are very
unhealthy for humans. Obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes
and some types of cancer have been linked to diets rich in animal
products. Feeding children these kinds of diets is likely setting them
up for an unhealthy life.
4. This Week’s Bible Verse
John 8:34 (RSV)
Jesus answered them, "Truly, truly, I say to
you, every one who commits sin is a slave to sin."
Indeed, we
become slaves of our sins because they end up controlling our hearts
and therefore our actions. Instead, by focusing on Jesus' teachings of
compassion, mercy and love, we are letting these guide us and our
choices; thus actively participating in the reconciliation of God’s
Creation.
5. Factory Farms and Public Health
Dr.
Aysha Akhtar, author of Animals and Public Health: Why treating
animals better is critical to human welfare and publish last month,
discusses the public health dangers of raising animals for food in
factory farms. Dr. Akhtar states that these farms are the ideal
vessels for viruses and bacteria to rotate, combine and mutate. Thus,
birdflu and other diseases will continue to be a threat for as long as
we raise animals in this way. The link between animals and public
health cannot longer be denied.

Exist

Short-sighted practices such as the one of raising
God's farmed animals in factory farms are causing much disease and
devastation. What goes around, comes around. We cannot expect to
promote health by causing misery to these animals.
6. This
Week’s Video - Melanie Joy on “Carnism: The Psychology of Eating Meat”
This is a fantastic presentation by Melanie Joy on "Carnism: The
Psychology of Eating Meat" at the McDougall Advanced Study Weekend,
February 2012, that helps understand why people choose to pet some
animals and eat others.
