1. Animal Morality
Marc Bekoff, professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology
at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and co-founder (with
primatologist Jane Goodall) of Ethologists for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals, is one of the many scientists who believe non-human animals
know the difference between right and wrong or in other words, that they
show moral behaviors.

All animals are a result of God’s creativity and love. Scientific
evidence has shown us just a glimpse into the vast and complex
inner-life of animals, which has left no doubt that they are capable of
complex behaviors and feelings, including joy, pleasure, pain, and that
they avoid death as much as we do.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
How can you say you're trying to spiritually evolve, without even
a thought about what happens to the animals whose lives are sacrificed
in the name of gluttony?
~ Oprah Winfrey (on her blog, June 2008)
3. Turning Despair into Hope
Mariann Sullivan & Jasmin Singer are, respectively, the Program
Director and Executive Director of "Our Hen House", a multimedia online
resource for everyone who wants to change the world for animals. In this
piece they eloquently explain what it feels like to carry the burden of
knowing the deep and unimaginable suffering of animals in the hands of
humans. Sullivan and Singer rightly emphasize that this burden can be
turned into activism, which helps bring healing and alleviates suffering
in this world. Also, they beautifully convey the great appreciation
animal advocates have for one another, as a community that offers
support and love to those of us who greatly need it in order to continue
exposing victimization.

4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and
love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.
You cannot serve God and mammon.
Indeed, there are many worldly pleasures that if not managed properly
could lead us away from the path of compassion, mercy and justice. One
of them is money. If we value money more than we value God's Creation
(our health, animals and the environment) we invariably will cause
misery to all of it.
5. America’s Double Standard
While Jane Velez-Mitchell, host of "Issues with Jane Velez-Mitchell,"
a topical event-driven show that airs every night at 7 ET on HLN,
believes Michael Vick should not be allowed to ever own a dog, she
thinks that he might get away with it by arguing that he’s been a victim
of a double standard. Velez-Mitchell rightly highlights the incredible
inconsistence that is well-accepted by most Americans of treating some
animals well and others as commodities (farmed animals, fur animals,
etc.)

The horrendous treatment of farmed animals is indefensible. From an
ethical and spiritual point of view, a dog, a cat, a pig or a chick
should be treated the same way. However, in today’s society, sadly, even
Christians try to excuse or rationalize the obvious inconsistence of
having some animals as “pets” and others as “food”. It is time that we
all align our most-inner values and beliefs with our food choices.
6. This Week’s Video – Jeffrey Mason: Does “humane meat” exist?
Jeffrey Masson, bestselling author of many books on animals including
"When Elephants Weep", discusses in this video excerpt the concept of
"humane meat."
