Marc Bekoff, author & ethologist, reminds everyone what's behind the iconic hamburger that most Americans eat without much thought. Bekoff highlights the unavoidable truth that an animal had to suffer and die for it. While for most people a hamburger represents just transient pleasure of taste, the implications that it carries are monumental. Health, the environment and ethics should be taken into account before anyone sinks their teeth on a burger.

The killing of God’s farmed animals for the mere taste and profit makes it a grave offense against God, who calls us to be compassionate, loving and merciful. Animal agriculture is inherently cruel and unethical. If we want to be good stewards of God’s Creation we should not support industries that dishonor God’s Creation.

3. Have We Turned Cows Into Cannibals?

The factory farming industry in our country has shown a lack of ethics and disrespect toward humans, animals and the environment that should be appalling to all of us. In this article, Dr. Will Tuttle exposes one of the many outrageous standard practices of this industry: what cows are fed. Everyone knows that cows are natural herbivores that thrive on grass. However, in order to reduce costs and raise their profits, the factory farming industry decided to ignore this simple fact and started feeding cows an unnatural “enriched” diet containing the rendered flesh and organs of fish, chickens, turkeys, pigs, and other animals, including dogs and cats who are euthanized every year, and the road-kill and other carcasses collected by governmental agencies. Not surprisingly, they also feed cows the ground-up slaughterhouse by-products of other cows turning them not just into carnivores, but into cannibals as well.

Going against nature’s ways, and therefore God’s ways, should be a red flag that something has terribly gone wrong with agribusiness with devastating consequences for all Creation. Those that support this industry are accomplices of the exploitation of farmed animals and all the unethical practices this entails. Our Christian faith revolves around the principles of justice, compassion, mercy and love. There is no room for clearly avoidable cruelty, devastation and sickness.

So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known.

When we expose and speak the truth we risk being alienated, persecuted and even attacked, emotionally, spiritually and physically. However, the sense of peace and fulfillment cannot be taken away from us, as well as all the seeds we plant in God's Creation for peace and love to emerge.

5. A Step Forward

Beginning Oct 31, The Harvard University Hospitality and Dining Services will only serve cage-free eggs in the dining halls. This announcement has been applauded by compassionate consumers and animal activist groups because it should help reduce the suffering of billions of hens confined in battery-cages every year. Josh M. Balk, spokesperson for the Humane Society of the United States said that “Switching to cage-free eggs is one of the most important actions a university can take to help oppose cruelty to animals.”

Any step to alleviate animal suffering is a step toward achieving peace and to be better stewards. Although eggs are not necessary in a well-balanced diet --they are loaded with cholesterol-- people who choose to eat eggs should at least stop supporting the battery-caged hen industry and reduce the consumption of eggs as much as possible. Battery-caged hens are the most abused animals in agribusiness.
