1. Gestation Crates are Torture Chambers

Although we can barely imagine what it must be like to live inside a gestation crate, this article helps us to have a good idea about the intense confinement pigs are subjected to, which makes them miserable and drives them to insanity.

2. Famous Quote

“A man is truly ethical only when he obeys the compulsion to help all life he is able to assist and shrinks from injuring anything that lives.”
~ Albert Schweitzer, Peace Nobel Prize recipient

3. The Disgusting Pork Industry

A four-year investigation into the pork industry by Genoways, the former editor of the Virginia Quarterly Review, sheds appalling facts about this industry that would make most people shudder in disgust. He addresses social issues, safety issues, animal welfare issues and even exposés.

The pork industry is an industry that profits from the unimaginable exploitation of pigs and also humans, with no regard for the life or health of either one. Therefore, supporting such industry violates our chore faith values: the teachings of Jesus Christ of compassion, justice and love.

4. Bible Verse
(RSV) Genesis 2:18-19

Then the LORD God said, "It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him." So out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.

These verses suggest that God made animals as Adam’s helpers and companions and not as mere commodities to be exploited. In fact, Adam named the animals, which we might interpret as concern and friendship. Simply put, we don’t name the animals we eat.

5. Inspiring Stories of Those Who Chose Compassion Over Profit

These are inspiring stories of former meat and dairy farmers, who chose to stop eating animals and profiting from their raising upon realizing that animals too have feelings and suffer, and that eating them causes misery to us as well.

A change of heart is what drives change in the world and these people’s example hopefully will inspire others to choose compassion over taste buds or profit.

6. This Week’s Video: Got Misery?

A new undercover investigation by Mercy For Animals shows workers at Andrus Farms, a dairy supplier to Great Lakes Cheese—one of the largest cheese producers in the world—viciously beating, stabbing, and dragging sick and injured cows. The investigation documented the following:

  • Workers viciously kicking and punching cows in their faces and bodies, beating them with rakes, and stabbing animals with sharp objects
  • A “downed” cow being kicked and beaten, having water forcefully sprayed in her face and nostrils, and being dragged by a rope around her neck
  • Workers using pruning shears to cut through the sensitive skin, nerves, and tailbones of cows without any painkillers
  • Sick or injured cows suffering from open wounds, infections, and serious injuries left to suffer without proper veterinary care
