1. Vegan Mayor is Changing Lives
Ed Smith, five-time
elected Mayor of Marshall, TX, is changing people's lives by
encouraging others to replace animal products in their diets for
healthy plant-based options. Mayor Smith became a vegan after a
prostate cancer diagnosis in 2008 prompted him to eat as healthiest as
possible. “Get Healthy Marshall”, the non-profit that Mayor Smith
started, allows people in Marshall and neighboring cities to be
exposed to and educated about vegan diets through monthly potlucks,
health fairs, supermarket tours, etc.

Kudos for Mayor Smith!
Elected officials are able to have a major impact on their
constituents’ lives and Mayor Smith is proving to be an excellent role
model in the area of health. Let’s hope his actions encourage others
to do the same elsewhere.
2. Famous Quote
“It is certainly
preferable to raise vegetables, and I think, therefore, that
vegetarianism is a commendable departure from the established
barbarous habit. That we can subsist on plant food and perform our
work even to advantage is not a theory, but a well-demonstrated fact.
Many races living almost exclusively on vegetables are of superior
physique and strength. There is no doubt that some plant food, such as
oatmeal, is more economical than meat, and superior to it in regard to
both mechanical and mental performance. [...] In view of these facts
every effort should be made to stop the wanton and cruel slaughter of
animals, which must be destructive to our morals.”
~ Nikola Tesla,
physicist and inventor
3. The Way Farmed Animals Are Raised
Affects Public Health
Ms. Kucinich, Policy Director for the Center
for Food Safety, helps the reader understand the link between the
horrific conditions in which chickens are raised for their flesh and
eggs, and the increasing rates of food poisoning and
antibiotic-resistant bacteria. She correctly says that when people are
truly concerned about the way farmed animals are treated, then they
adopt a vegan diet.

a chicken exists only to become chicken nuggets, does it really matter
how he lived? The connection between the humane treatment of animals,
health and food safety.
While some animals raised for food are
treated less abusively than others, there’s some degree of fear and
suffering involved; and always an early death. Adopting a plant-based
diet helps God’s animals and certainly reduces the risk of food
poisoning and other public health issues. Instead of trying to treat
animals less abusively, it would be much more effective to show them
compassion and not eat them.
4. Bible Verse - (RSV) Romans
5:5
…and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been
poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit which has been given to
us.
Jesus said that the kingdom of God is within us. Our true
essence is one of love, incompatible with cruelty and hate. The more
we align our inner-values and faith with our choices, the more we are
participating in the healing and reconciliation of God’s Creation.
Indeed, hope doesn’t disappoint us!
5. More People Dabbling
with a Vegan Diet
A growing number of people are are pledging vegan
for a few weeks or 30 days given the abundance scientific evidence
indicating the many health and environmental benefits of plant-based
diets. Moreover, the exposure of the horrific treatment of animals
raised for food are tugging at people’s hearts; and the fact that many
celebrities and prominent athletes encourage Meatless Mondays, the
reduction of animal products and vegan meals helps people make the
decision to take the vegan pledge.

rise of the part-time vegans.
Due to lack of information,
popular myths and other factors, some people find going vegan to be an
incredibly difficult lifestyle and fear taking this step. This is why
sometimes just trying a vegan diet for a few weeks helps these people
realize that a well-planned plant-based diet is relatively easy, very
tasty and very attainable.
I think we should encourage everyone
around us to take the pledge! We never know when a 30-day pledge might
extend to a lifetime one.

or Just Snake Oil?
Advice to eat oily fish or take fish oil to
lower risk of heart disease, stroke, or mortality is no longer
