1. Don’t Tell Me What to Do
This is an interesting piece
depicting the attitude of many people in regards to the consequences
of their choices. These people, when exposed to the suffering of
humans and non-human animals, claim that their choices are personal
and must be respected. This seems to be the excuse when they are
exposed to the suffering of close to 60 billion land animals every
day, who are raised for food with much pain and terror.

I have encountered the “don’t tell me what
to do” numerous times just vacationing with family and relatives. I
think that people’s guilt in learning the tremendous suffering they
cause simply for taste and convenience catalyze a defensive mode that
results in ‘it’s a personal choice” argument. Indeed, we cannot force
people into doing anything, but we can teach them, educate them,
inspire them, challenge them, and especially showing them what
compassion and love look like in order to for them to hopefully change
their mind and make choices that cause as little suffering in all of
God’s Creation.
2. Famous Quote
“True peace is not… a
lovely ‘façade’ which conceals conflicts and divisions. Peace calls
for daily commitment.”
~ Pope Francis, in his first Christmas
message
Being a vegan advocate in today’s society, especially among
family and friends, sometimes may cause tension and stress in
relationships; however, as Pope Francis points out, it’s important to
be true to our values and be committed to them, with respect and
kindness to our fellow beings, without compromising them. Otherwise,
maintaining peace while trumping our values is not true peace. As
Philip Wollen says, "True peace is not the absence of war but the
presence of justice."
3. Desmond Tutu on Behalf of God’s
Animal
Archbishop Desmond Tutu is making headlines once again, but
this time is not because of his tireless work to end discrimination
among humans but actually to expose the injustice animals are
subjected to. He states, “I have seen firsthand how injustice gets
overlooked when the victims are powerless or vulnerable, when they
have no one to speak up for them and no means of representing
themselves to a higher authority. Animals are in precisely that
position. Unless we are mindful of their interests and speak out
loudly on their behalf, abuse and cruelty go unchallenged.
It is a
kind of theological folly to suppose that God has made the entire
world just for human beings, or to suppose that God is interested in
only one of the millions of species that inhabit God’s good earth.”

Tutu on Animal Welfare: We Must Fight Injustice to Animals.
It’s
fantastic that such a prominent church leader recognizes and voices
the massive victimization of God’s animals. Archbishop Desmond Tutu is
setting an incredible precedent at stating that we must fight the
terrible injustice to animals, especially because they are vulnerable
and are also God’s creatures.
4. Bible Verse
(RSV)
Proverbs 14:5
”A faithful witness does not lie, but a false witness
breathes out lies.”
Indeed, a faithful witness doesn’t need to lie
because he/she speaks the truth. However, a false witness must cover
the truth with lies in order to deceive. This is the case of the
animal-agriculture industry that continues to put much effort in
concealing their egregious practices from the public.
5. We
Betray God’s Animals
Gary Smith, writer of the blog “The Thinking
Vegan”, explains why raising animals for food is clearly a betrayal to
them. These animals never expect to be taken away from their
mothers, beaten, enslaved, mutilated and ultimately killed violently.
Please visit Betrayal.
Indeed, when we cause unnecessary suffering to God’s animals we are
betraying them. They have done nothing to us to deserve such abusive
treatment and they don’t understand why we are causing them so much
pain and death. Since God entrusted His/Her animals to us, being
tyrants over them is also a betrayal to God.
