1. H6N1 Jumps to Humans
A 20-year-old Taiwanese woman has been
infected with the new strain of bird flu, H6N1, raising much concern
in the scientific community since previously scientists had not
thought this could happen. This new finding may indicate a pandemic is
possible.

Exploiting God’s animals for
food has proven to be disastrous for humans, but we still continue to
do it. Virus and bacteria mutate, rotate and combine when animals are
confined, such as in animal agriculture operations.
Unless we
embrace a vegan lifestyle (doing our best to minimize and alleviate
the suffering of all other living beings, humans and nonhumans) our
spiritual efforts are thwarted. If we want peace, we should not
support violence. If we want love, we should love others. If we want
freedom, we should allow all beings to be free. If we don't want
others to hurt us, then we shouldn't hurt others. If we want health,
we should promote health in others. To embrace a vegan lifestyle to
the best of our abilities is to promote healing, restoration and
reconciliation.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
"Why do we
have a milk group? Because we have a National Diary Council. Why do we
have a meat group? Because we have an extremely powerful meat lobby."
– Marion Nestle, Director of Public Health Initiatives for
the Steinhardt School of Education, quoted by Pamela Rice in 101
Reasons why I’m a Vegetarian, 2005, p.74.
3. Meat Decline in
the U.S.
The U.S. is the second meat consumer per capita in the
word (after Luxemburg) but the trend is losing popularity. Meat
consumption has been decreasing steadily in the last decade and
meatless meals have been gaining popularity thanks to celebrities,
politicians, physicians, environmentalists, religious leaders and
business people speaking up about the benefits of plant-based diets.

meat: is meat consumption falling out of style in the U.S.?
The
decline in meat consumption in the U.S. is a very good sign that
there’s more awareness about the health, environmental and ethical
issues linked to raising God’s animals for food. Let’s keep waking in
the direction of compassion, peace and sustainability.
4. This
Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Matt. 25:35
“For I was
hungry and you gave me food.… [A]s you did it to one of the least of
these my
brethren, you did it to me”
Yet, while tens of
millions of people die annually from starvation- related causes and
close to a billion suffer from malnutrition, 37 percent of the
world’s harvested grain is fed to animals being raised for slaughter;
in the United States, the figure is 66 percent.
5. FDA Plans
to Reduce Antibiotic Use in Farms
Antibiotic-resistant bacteria is
a major threat to public health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration
Agency (FDA) is devising a plan to curb antibiotic use in livestock,
where the majority of antibiotics are used. According to the FDA 81%
of all the raw ground turkey, 69% of pork chops, 55% of ground beef
and 39% of chicken the agency tested was contaminated with
antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The FDA's plan will encourage the
voluntary reduction in antibiotics used in livestock.

\Antibiotics are used in
God’s animals raised for food so they can survive the conditions in
factory farms that include intense confinement and filth, where
disease is very common. Instead of waiting for pharmaceutical
companies and factory farms to voluntary reduce the use of antibiotics
in meat, egg and dairy production, we should all stop eating God’s
animals. Change starts with us and the effects ripple throughout God’s
Creation.
