1. Kids Embrace Plant-Based Diets
Kate, a
mother of vegan kids, explains in this blog how easy it really was for
her kids to embrace first a vegetarian diet and now a vegan one. She
advices parents to tell the kids the truth about where different foods
come from in age-appropriate stories or drawings. She also has tips on
how to deal with outside influences.

Kids embrace compassion, respect and love when they are
encouraged in them, especially when someone who they respect much (a
parent, a mentor, etc.) mimics these behaviors and attitudes to them.
Children thrive in an environment of harmony and non-violence, and
it’s not surprising why they thrive on plant-based diets. In fact,
children tend to embrace veganism much more easily than adults.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
“For as long as man
continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings, he will
never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they
will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain
cannot reap joy and love.”
― Pythagoras
3.
Feminism and Veganism
Angel Flinn, Director of Outreach for
Gentle World, explores the issues that seem to link feminism to
veganism. The exploitation of the female reproductive system is a
crucial aspect that allows the mass production of animals raised for
food. For example, the reality of dairy production, which is one of
the most abusive systems that have ever existed in the animal-based
agriculture system, should prompt anyone --women especially-- to stop
supporting this industry.

Breeding Slavery: Why Veganism Should Be Considered a Feminist Issue
Female animals raised for food are the most exploited animals
in the industry. They have the amazing gift of being able to give
birth and nurture their infants. What we do to these animals is beyond
cruel: we impregnate them artificially, steal their milk or eggs, and
also steal their babies; we then kill them after they are no longer of
use. No love, no mercy, no justice.
4. This Week’s Bible
Verse
Proverbs 12:10 teaches, “A righteous man has regard for
the life of his beast,” and Psalm 145:9 reminds us that “The Lord is
good to all, and his compassion is over all that he has made.”
Yes, God care about all creatures and His/Her compassion extends to
everyone! If we eat the products of factory farming we are, Fr. John
Dear notes, “paying people to be cruel.”
5. Tyson Foods
Again on the Spotlight
A new undercover investigation by the
animal advocacy group Mercy for Animals revealed egregious cruelty at
a Tyson farm in Oklahoma, where workers are shown hitting pigs,
throwing pigs, punching pigs, etc, which prompted Tyson Foods to cut
ties with this farm.

Abuse
This kind of abuse and cruelty is the norm and not
the exception. After all, confining pigs in small crates, ripping
their testicles out, cutting their tails off without anesthesia and
slamming piglets on the floor to kill them are some examples of the
legal, standard procedures in the pork industry. What Tyson Foods did
was not prompted by their concern about pigs but by their concern of
bad publicity. After all, if people found out how tortured these
animals are, it would certainly lower the company’s profits.
