1. Cows Mourn and Suffer
Neighbors around Sunshine Dairy Farm
in Newbury, MA called the police to check on strange, distress sounds.
Upon inspection the police reassured them that nobody was in distress
and that it was simply cows mourning the loss of having been separated
from their newborn calves. According to police this happens every
year.

Strange noises turn out to be cows missing their calves
“Residents in the area of Sunshine Dairy Farm may notice loud noises
coming from the dairy cows at all hours of the day and night. We’ve
been informed that the cows are not in distress and that the noises
are a normal part of farming practices.” Not in distress??!! Cows
mourn and suffer much like humans; and therefore, separating them from
their babies is cruel. Anyone who consumes dairy is supporting this
very inhumane “standard” practice of not allowing calves stay with
their mothers as God intended.
2. This Week’s Famous
Quote
"My perspective of veganism was most affected by
learning that the veal calf is a by-product of dairying, and that in
essence there is a slice of veal in every glass of what I had thought
was an innocuous white liquid - milk."
~ Rynn Berry
3. Human Breast Milk vs. Cow’s Milk
This is a very thought
provoking article on cow’s milk vs. human breast milk. James
McWilliams ponders on the absurdity of humans not questioning the fact
that cow’s milk is far from ideal for humans, and that it entails much
exploitation of cows and intense marketing by the milk industry. He
says, “Given that drinking the milk of one’s own species provides the
most natural source of nutrition known to mammalian life, it’s
strange–or perhaps just a testament to the marketing geniuses in the
milk industry–that everyday consumers of conventional bovine milk
rarely pause to ponder the implications of supping on the stolen
secretions of another species.”

Milk of human kindness denied to dairy cows
Cow’s
milk is for calves. Milk is very species-specific and is intended to
be a food source during infancy. Humans have strayed away from the
natural world and drink milk from other species -- mainly cow’s -- and
do so throughout all stages of life. This causes much suffering to
cows and their babies, and has serious repercussions on human health.
It’s time to listen to our inner wisdom, God’s will, and stop
the exploitation of God’s animals. Showing compassion to them helps us
make mindful choices.
4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) 1 John 4:8
He who does not love does not know God; for
God is love.
We are created in God’s image of love and
therefore we are called to be care-takers of God’s Creation, not
tyrants over God’s creatures. Love and animal exploitation cannot
co-exist.
5. Two Ways to Die
In poultry
slaughterhouses, birds die in two ways. Both ways are filled with fear
and pain, but one is more agonizing than the other. Birds are shackled
and hung by their fragile legs, and led to an electrified bath of
water. However, some birds lift their heads up and avoid it, which
prevents them from getting unconscious. Then they go through the neck
cutting blade, which they might miss again and finally to a scalding
bath of water. Either way, scalded alive or dead, is the fate of all
birds raised for food.

The
needless and merciless business of raising animals for food causes
unspeakable suffering to all of God’s Creation. We need to acknowledge
and realize that when we cause misery to God’s animals we are causing
misery to ourselves as well. We reap what we sow.

This Week’s Video: Free Birds
"Free Birds", an animated movie
that tells the story of two turkeys who travel back in time to the
first "Thanksgiving Day" in hopes of putting an end to the barbaric
and senseless tradition of eating turkey. This movie will hopefully
touch the hearts and minds of viewers, and raise awareness about the
suffering of 45 million turkeys who are slaughtered every year in the
U.S. for tradition.
