1. Pink Slime is Back
In spite of public
uproar, pink slime (a meat “product” made from processed beef
trimmings treated with ammonia) is making a come back to school
cafeterias in at least 7 states. Ironically, this seems to be
happening in response to new nutrition guidelines for school lunches
that include more fruits and veggies, and are therefore most
expensive. Some states will buy pink slime to offset costs.

If we want children to grow in a healthy and compassionate world we
have to contribute by also feeding our children healthy food that
doesn’t involve cruelty. When we allow foods like “pink slime” to be
fed to children, we are saying we don’t care about their health or how
their food is produced. /p>
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
“Once you decide that you regard victimizing vulnerable nonhumans is
not morally acceptable, it is easy to go and stay vegan.”

3. A Close Look at a Chicken Nugget
Chicken nuggets are part of school lunches and the fast food
industry, and most people are probably not aware that what they feed
their children is not what it seems. Chicken nuggets are 50% or less
chicken meat (muscle) and the rest is primarily fat, blood vessels,
nerve tissue, connective tissue and bone spicules.

A chicken nugget is nothing else that the very processed remains of a
tortured being. Of course it’s not a healthy food, but most
importantly it’s not a food that aligns with Christian values and
beliefs of compassion, mercy and stewardship. It’s time we make animal
products a thing of the past.
4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Luke 13:34
How often would I have gathered your
children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you
would not!
Jesus compared his love for us to a hen’s love for
her chicks. So how deeply must a hen be able to love! However,
chickens raised for food are treated as mere commodities, making a
mockery of God’s love for His/Her Creation.
5. Yes… More
Sad News about Poultry
The flesh of poultry raised for food
contains much more than what consumers want as it has been found to
contain pus, feces, bleach and harmful bacteria. Sadly, the USDA’s
answer to this problem is far from a solution. They basically let
slaughterplants self-inspect and allow even more chemicals to be used
in poultry.

6. This Week’s Video: Free Birds
"Free
Birds", an animated movie scheduled to premier Nov 1, tells the
story of two turkeys who travel back in time to the first
"Thanksgiving Day" in hopes of putting an end to the barbaric and
senseless tradition of eating turkey. This movie will hopefully touch
the hearts and minds of viewers, and raise awareness about the
suffering of 45 million turkeys who are slaughtered every year in the
U.S. for tradition.
