1. Our Hypocrisy
to God’s Animals
This powerful column by Nicholas D. Kristof
explores the capacity of humans to act in incredibly cruel ways
towards other humans and animals. Kristof also explores the way
humanity has dealt with animals and our hypocrisy to them, by
exploiting them indiscriminately while admiring and recognizing their
qualities and abilities. In fact, he asks, "will our descendants be
mystified by how good and decent people in the early 21st century —
that’s us — could have been so oblivious to the unethical treatment of
animals?"

In the U.S.
(all 50 states) and in many other countries, there are laws that
protect companion animals from cruelty; while at the same time,
countless other species are legally exploited in terrible ways. This
split that occurs in our conscience carries tremendous consequences,
including the vast disease, violence and environmental destruction in
all of God’s Creation.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
“It’s not our job to toughen our children up to face a cruel and
heartless world. It’s our job to raise children who will make the
world a little less cruel and heartless.”
~ L.R. Knost
3. Chickens: God’s Amazing Animals
Most people hardly
know how amazing and complex creatures chickens are! Read this article
to get a glimpse of 10 facts about these animals and their lives:
10 Fascinating Facts About Chickens:

Chickens play,
forage, sunbathe, communicate, talk to their unborn babies, solve
complex problems, etc., but most importantly, they are able to suffer.
This abundant knowledge about chickens should help us refrain from
harming them and eating them. Living in harmony with God’s animals
encourages our sense of empathy and compassion.
4. This
Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Joshua 1:9
"Have I not
commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened,
neither be dismayed; for the LORD your God is with you wherever you
go."
In a world beset of suffering it's not hard to sometimes
feel despair and frustration due to the colossal cruelty that
surrounds us. However, once we connect to our true essence, the
essence of God in us, we may find the peace and courage needed to face
obstacles and to continue bringing healing and reconciliation.
5. Humane Treatment of Animals Should be the Core for
Vegetarianism
More people are choosing to transition to
plant-based diets because of the abundant evidence of their positive
effects on human health. However, Oxford ethicist William MacAskill
(formerly William Crouch) believes that vegetarianism’s main core
should be our treatment to animals. He believes that the health
benefits rely more on the decrease in consumption of red meat, while
the animals who suffer the most abuse are those who produce milk and
eggs. MacAskill challenges people to look into their ethical values in
order to make food choices.

Compassion is really what drives people to make ethical
choices and what helps people stick to those choices. When people
become vegetarian for health reasons, they may “cheat” every now and
then. On the other hand, when people choose foods based on compassion,
they rarely or never think about eating something that came from a
suffering being.
