1. A Trip of Horror
Thomas Walkom, columnist for
The Star, exposes the plight of farmed animals, more specifically of
pigs on their way to slaughter. Walkom shares what happens in Lake
Shore Boulevard in Toronto, when a parade of tractor-trailer trucks
passes by carrying pigs to slaughter. As the trucks moves slowly due
the traffic, everyone can see and many videotape, pigs “jostling
against one another in a mash of their own vomit and excrement”
trapped in trucks in the sweltering heat without any reprieve. As
Thomas Walkom says, “If people wanted to end hog misery, they easily
could — simply by not eating pork.”

The
violence perpetrated toward God’s farmed animals is mostly hidden from
the public, although animal advocates are tirelessly working to expose
it. Being present, mindful, one with God, one with life, is simply
incompatible with violence. Our essence is love and if we truly want
to reflect it onto all Creation, we need to stop exploiting other
beings.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds
them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places!
~
Leonardo da Vinci
3. Rev. Miles Exposes Rep. Steve King
Reverend Austin Miles has written a fantastic piece exposing
and questioning Rep. Steve King's (R-Iowa) morality. Rev. Miles lists
King’s extensive "callous and uncaring" voting record against animal
welfare in the last 9 years, and calls this behavior “disturbing” and
“sinful”. A few examples of animal-related legislation that King has
opposed include: an amendment cracking down on bear baiting on federal
lands, a bill banning horse slaughter for human consumption, an act
strengthening penalties for dogfighting and cockfighting, a bill
prohibiting the sale of primates as pets and several other pieces of
legislation aimed at protecting wildlife species.

Indeed, Mr.
King’s clear opposition to alleviating the suffering of God’s animals
is callous and merciless. Let’s hope people learn about this and stop
supporting him and his agenda, which is obviously backed by people who
benefit from the exploitation of these innocent creatures.
Mr. King should also be recipient of our compassion; because those who
lack empathy for the pain of others have also been shown little
empathy and compassion. After all, in this web of love, God’s
Creation, we are all connected. Once we see ourselves in others we
don’t want to cause pain and suffering.
4. This
Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Job 12:7-10
But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the
air, and they will tell you; or the plants of the earth, and they will
teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all
these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his
hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
The
essence of God, the breath of our Creator, is in each and every one of
us. Every creature on Earth is connected by this web of infinite love
and wisdom. Once we embrace this fact, it’s not possible to willingly
and unnecessarily cause harm to any creature.

California Slaughterhouse Closes
An undercover video released
by Compassion Over Killing showing egregious acts of cruelty in a
slaughterhouse in California has prompted the USDA to close it. The
video shows workers pulling and kicking downer dairy cows, shooting
them repeatedly in the head, and spraying and shocking them in an
attempt to get them to move. And since this slaughterhouse processed
dairy cows, the USDA is looking into the possibility that some of
these animals might have had mad cow disease.

It’s good news that this video was taken
seriously so that in this slaughterhouse cows are no longer tortured
and killed, at least for now. However, the very sad reality is that
these acts of barbaric cruelty are not isolated cases, but the norm in
factory farms and slaughterhouses. The only way to prevent these
abuses from happening is to stop exploiting God’s animals for our
benefit. In fact, we do not ever benefit from hardening our hearts and
ignoring the fact that all beings share the same essence of love.
Let’s sow love, joy and peace, so we can reap love, joy and peace.
