1. Dangerous Meat
A new study has shed even more evidence that meat products are not
safe. Researchers at the Translational Genomics Research Institute
tested 137 packages of chicken, turkey, and other meat bought at
twenty-six grocery stores in five cities across the country. Nearly half
of the tested samples were infected with Staphylococcus aureus
bacteria, which are known to cause staph infections and a host of other
serious illnesses. Moreover, half of the bacteria found in the study
were resistant to at least three antibiotics. “Antibiotics are the most
important drugs that we have to treat Staph infections; but when Staph
are resistant to three, four, five or even nine different antibiotics —
like we saw in this study — that leaves physicians few options,” said
Lance B. Price, Ph.D., senior author of the study and Director of TGen’s
Center for Food Microbiology and Environmental Health. To learn more

Nationwide study finds U.S. meat and poultry is widely contaminated
The typical American diet is full of animal products, including meat
of all types, which is obtained from animals raised in factory farms.
These intensive confinement systems are the perfect vessels to allow
bacteria to mutate due to the irresponsible high amount of antibiotics
given to these poor animals. When we cause misery to God’s animals, we
are causing misery to ourselves and the rest of Creation.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
“We don't need to eat anyone who would run, swim, or fly away if he
could.”
~ James Cromwell, American film and television actor
3. “Meatless Monday” Expanding!
Thanks to the increasing awareness that the typical American diet is
detrimental for our health, Toyota, Northern Trust Bank and the U.S.
Department of Interior are among the many organizations that have
adopted Meatless Mondays, thus helping their staff to learn and
experience the benefits of a plant-based diet. According to
Peggy Neu, president of “The Monday Campaign”, one of the main
reasons Meatless Mondays are so appealing to businesses "is that it
rests at the intersection of health and wellness and sustainability
initiatives." To learn more please search online for

How encouraging it is to learn that more people every day are
learning that plant-based diets are not only healthy, but also
sustainable and compassionate! Let’s do our part, as stewards of God’s
Creation, to spread the word about the benefits of plant-based diets so
healing and reconciliation in Creation occur faster and sooner.
4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) Matthew 5:9
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of
God."
We are called to actively seek peace among all creatures in order to
help bring healing and reconciliation to God's Creation. Being sons and
daughters of God is a privilege as well as a responsibility that
involves obedience to God. It also means reflecting God's essence of
love onto all Creation, which undeniably embraces showing mercy, love
and compassion to all of God's creatures.
5. Diseases Arise from Animal Agriculture
A recent report by the International Livestock Research Institute
said that a growing number of livestock are fuelling new animal
epidemics worldwide, such as SARS and H1N1. The report stated that
seventy-five percent of emerging infectious diseases originate in
animals, and of these 61 percent are transmissible between animals and
humans. "A new disease emerges every four months; many are trivial but
HIV, SARS and avian influenza (eg. H5N1) illustrate the huge potential
impacts," John McDermott and Delia Grace at the Nairobi-based institute
wrote in the report. To read the article please search online for
Growing number of farm animals spawn
new diseases
Factory farms are the perfect vessels for new bacteria and viruses to
arise, leaving humans and animals vulnerable to potentially decimating
epidemics. The cost (financial, emotional, physical, environmental and
even spiritual) could prove too much for humanity's sake. I think the
time has come when as stewards of God's Creation we have to make serious
decisions about our actions, which in turn affect the fate of God's
Creation. In this case, we cannot claim ignorance as there is plenty of
warning evidence.
