1. Animal Abuse at Egg Farm

The Humane Society of the United States has released a video from an undercover investigation at egg farm Cal-Maine in Waelder, Texas, showing multiple abuses and food safety violations such as dead birds in cages with live birds, birds stuck in their cages, overcrowding, hens covered in feces and a dead bird as eggs roll by just inches away on a conveyer belt. Although these kinds of abuses are appalling, they are nonetheless common in this industry. The most effective way to alleviate the suffering of egg-laying hens is to stop supporting the egg-industry. Transitioning to a plant-based diet shows compassion to God's animals.

2. Famous Quote

“As long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap the joy of love.”

~ Pythagoras

3. Cruelty at Slaughterhouses

Slaughterhouses in the United Kingdom have been in the spotlight lately thanks to animal advocacy groups that released undercover videos of animal cruelty. Due to consumer’s reactions, Morrisons, a large supermarket chain, has become the first supermarket to promise to install CCTV at its abattoirs to reassure the public. To read the full article please search online for Supermarket chain pledges CCTV in abattoirs to stamp out cruelty

Animal cruelty in slaughterhouses throughout the world has been very well documented. The number of animals killed every day and the speed at what this is done makes it very unlikely that God’s farmed animals don’t encounter pain and terror. The most effective way to ensure these animals are treated with compassion is not to support the dairy, meat or egg industries, and instead transition to a plant-based diet.

4. Bible Verse

(RSV) Romans 3:23-24

"... since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus,"

This verse reminds us that we live in an imperfect world and that all of us make mistakes. Sometimes we like to see ourselves more righteous than others, which only leads to judgment, criticism and intolerance. It is only by the grace of God that we are able to do what is right, to show compassion and to show love to all of God's Creation.

5. The Issues with Free-Ranged Meat

James McWilliams, Associate Professor of history at Texas State University, San Marcos, and author of "Just Food: Where Locavores Get It Wrong and How We Can Truly Eat Responsibly", discusses the false assumption that free-range meat is the way to go. While he acknowledges that free-range animals do experience less miserable lives than factory farmed animals, he exposes the ethical problems of killing animals that we don't need for survival; especially, killing healthy, young animals depriving them of their full potential as living creatures. To read the full article please search online for Why Free-Ranged Meat is not Much Better than Factory-Farmed

Killing God's animals for the sake of profit and taste raises serious ethical issues that are intimately woven with our Christian faith. Certainly, killing an animal we don't really need for survival is not an example of good stewardship but instead of a hardened heart.

6. This Week’s Video – “What part of “Thou Shall not Kill” don’t you understand?”
