1. Good News for Hens in California
California will become a cage-free state in 2015. Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger (CA) has signed A.B. 1437, a bill backed by the Humane
Society of the United States (HSUS) that requires that starting in 2015
all whole eggs sold in California must come from hens who were able to
stand up, lie down, turn around, and fully extend their limbs without
touching one another or the sides of an enclosure. To read the full

Schwarzenegger Signs Landmark Egg Bill
Great news for hens in California! Although hens should not be
exploited for their eggs, the fact is that this new legislation will
reduce the suffering of millions of hens who currently survive in tiny
cages without the chance to exercise any of their God given instincts.
Hopefully more states will follow CA and thus show compassion for hens.
2. This Week’s Famous Quote
“What is so beneficial to the people as liberty, which we see not
only to be greedily sought after by men, but also by beasts, and to be
preferred to all things.”
~ Cicero (B.C. 106-43)
3. Turner Eggs Tries to Change Image After Animal
Cruelty Allegations
Last month the Maine Department of Agriculture ordered former
DeCoster Egg Farm in Turner to pay $25,000 in penalties and $100,000 to
settle a civil complaint over animal cruelty allegations including birds
being swung by the neck and thrown in the trash by workers, and other
injured and sick birds left untreated without adequate food and water.
Now, this egg farm is promoting a more animal-friendly image and invited
reporters to look at their improved facilities. However, their hens
still remain in standard wire battery cages where birds are packed in
four-to-five to a cage. The animal advocacy group Mercy for Animals
finds that unacceptable and believes that it is consumers who will
ultimately decide the kind of conditions hens will be kept in. To read

Turner Egg Farm Brushes Up Image in Wake of Fines
Industrial egg farms consider birds a commodity and they don't see
anything wrong in keeping these animals under intense confinement where
they cannot exercise any of their God-given instincts. It is true that
each of us, stewards of God's Creation, will ultimately decide the fate
of God's animals by choosing what industries to support. We can choose
to show compassion or choose to ignore the plight of God's farmed
animals.
4. This Week’s Bible Verse
(RSV) 2 Corinthians 7:1
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from
every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the
fear of God.
There are plenty of temptations in this world that push us away from
God; however, even an imperfect world, God's Grace is at work inside us.
We are called to be obedient to God to the best of our abilities and
thus reflect God's love onto all Creation.
5. Change of Diet after Witnessing Cow being
Slaughtered
The assistant director on Ryan Piers Williams' new movie The Dry
Land stopped eating meat after witnessing the slaughter of a cow, a
scene that was filmed for the project. Williams believes we are
disconnected with the way wars are fought just as to how animals are
slaughtered for food. About the cow slaughter he said, "It was very
brutal to watch and to witness."

Graphic Slaughter Scene Turns The Dry Land's
Assistant Director Vegetarian
"An image is worth a thousand words." The slaughtering of an animal,
a barbaric and brutal act no matter how humanely is carried out, is an
eye-opening experience that can help people make mindful choices
surrounding their diet. However, the article above helps us wonder, why
didn’t all the witnesses make the same choice to stop eating meat as the
assistant director? Is it easier to ignore suffering and give into our
desires? In a Fallen world it’s indeed hard to not to follow our
desires, but as Christians we are called to be obedient to God even in
times of trial and temptation.
