1. Subway Goes Cage-Free

The Humane Society of the United States announced that Subway® restaurants will begin the process of transitioning to cage-free eggs for their US establishments. Effective immediately, the chain is going to use 4% of their eggs from cage-free facilities.

It's fantastic that Subway has decided to alleviate animal suffering by transitioning to cage-free eggs, which for hens, exploited by the egg-industry, means more space and the opportunity to nest. Little by little, humans are making choices that help restore God's Creation by showing compassion to God’s animals and promoting harmony and peace.

2. Famous Quote

"Love of animals is a universal impulse, a common ground on which all of us may meet. By loving and understanding animals, perhaps we humans shall come to understand each other."

Dr. Louis J. Camuti (1893 - 1981), veterinarian and author of “All My Patients Are Under The Bed: Memoirs of a Cat Doctor”.

3. Eye-Opening Speaker

Gary Yourofsky, animal rights activist who travels throughout the US speaking at colleges, was recently at the NSU Shepard Broad Law Center where, as usual, during his presentation he showed a short movie about factory farming. Of course there was tremendous suffering in it, which make students ponder "If it's not good enough for your eyes, why is it good enough for your stomach?", as Gary says.

Most people know that a video about factory farming is a horror movie; however, in spite of this reality, most people continue to eat meat from God's tortured animals. Christianity is about compassion, mercy, justice and peace, so Christians should be the first ones not to support factory farming.

4. Bible Verse
(RSV) Philippians 2:5-8

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.

What a poignant reminder that we ought to be humble like Jesus! As humans, we are fast to forget how dominion and power need to be dealt with humility and love. Only then we can follow God.

5. Downer Pigs in CA Banned from Food Supply

A federal appeals court has banned the sale of pork products made from pigs that were too sick to walk before they were slaughtered. Although the meat industry is trying to find loopholes and plans to appeal this new regulation, Jonathan Lovvorn, vice present of the Humane Society of the United States, said the court "upheld the state's right to protect consumers from sick, disabled animals in the food supply, and to protect animals from horrific abuses."

It is unimaginable the pain and suffering that factory farmed animals endure throughout their lives. The percentage of downer animals in the meat industry is appalling, and the profit squeezed through these animals is beyond callous and unethical. It is time that we acknowledge that as long as meat is part of our diets, billions of God's farmed animals are going to suffer unnecessarily every year.

6. This Week’s Video: Deadly Horse Round-Ups

The meat industry needs land and water for their cattle to meet the ever-growing appetite for cheap animal products in the US. However, there is not enough agricultural land available to grow the crops to feed these animals; therefore, the meat industry destroys grasslands, and forests; and in the process displaces and kills wild animals. In this case, tens of thousands of wild mustangs and other horses who are rounded up through cruel and deadly drives, and then locked in tiny pens where they waste away in captivity. Moreover, pregnant mares and young foals are vulnerable to these round-ups and often die.
