1. Plant-Based Foods Right for Athletes

NBA star John Salley and professional triathlete Brendan Brazier are two well-known athletes that are helping to promote a plant-based diet by backing PCRM's 21-Day Vegan Kickstart. The program walks users through a diet makeover with a meal plan, cooking demos and other resources. According to Susan Levin, director of nutrition education at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a well-planed plant-based diet is optimal for athletes.

In our society, it is well-known athletes that often promote the typical American diet laden with animal products. It's great that in the case above, high-profile athletes are raising awareness on the benefits of a plant-base diet, which helps us good stewards of all of God's Creation.

It is a fact that factory farms are the perfect vessels where viruses and bacteria mutate, rotating from animal to animal and even animal to human and vice-versa. However, profit and taste still dominate our society, and until we realize that exploiting God's animals also brings misery to humanity, we will continue to give in into our earthly desires and walk away from God's will for us: to be in perfect peace and harmony with all of Creation.

Love is patient and kind; love is not jealous or boastful; it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

It is hard to love our enemies or even those who disagree with us; however, we should be reminded that Jesus' teachings of love, compassion and mercy are to be followed in obedience to God. A loving heart accomplishes much for God's kingdom!

5. Animal Protein Raises Diabetes Risk

According to a new study in this month’s issue of Diabetes Care, diabetes risk increases with higher intake of total protein and animal protein. The study from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) study and found that for every 5 percent of calories consumed from protein instead of carbohydrate or fat, the risk of developing diabetes increased 30 percent. Increased animal protein intake coincided with increased intakes of saturated fat, cholesterol, and heme iron, and with increased body mass index, waist circumference, and blood pressure. Vegetable protein intake was not associated with diabetes risk.

More and more evidence shows that a well-balanced plant-based diet helps prevent many diseases including diabetes. When we take care of our bodies, temples of the Holy Spirit, we are showing obedience to God.
