1. Statistics on Animals Killed for Food
The total number of land animals killed for food in the U.S. in 2008
was down 0.6% from 2007, at 10,279 million, despite a 1% increase in
U.S. population, according to data extrapolated from the USDA. However,
the # of land animals killed for food worldwide, according to the UN
Food and Agriculture Administration, increased 1.2% comparing to a 1.2%
population increase as well. Critics say that the figure of animals
killed last year does not reflect true numbers since many countries
under-report or don’t report at all.

At Last - Number of Animals Killed Drops
Over 10 billion land animals are slaughtered every year in the US for
food consumption and the figure worldwide is at least 58 billion. Never
in history have we tortured and killed so many animals in order to eat
them. If these figures don't seem appalling to us, stewards of God's
Creation, then we can rest assured that we suffer from hardness of
heart.
2. Famous Quote
"I used to look on 'converted' vegetarians with contempt, but I've
come to realize there is no case to be made for eating meat."
~ Neel Mukherjee, Award-winning novelist
3. Bears: Farmed Animals?
Bile from bears is a growing demand in Asia since it is believed that
it can help cure everything from hemorrhoids to epilepsy. However, this
practice brings misery to these animals who are usually housed in small
cages and their bile is sucked from their gall bladders using crude
catheters, sometimes creating pus-filled abscesses or internal bile
leakage leading to the slow death of many due to infections or liver
ailments, including cancer. Fortunately, there are efforts to stop this
practice and just recently 19 bears were rescued from one of these bile
farms in Vietnam and are being taken to a rescue center.

It's unbelievable how humans can exploit any of God's animals for our
own benefit without any consideration for the creatures. Unless we take
a stand against the victimization of these animals, and therefore refuse
to support industries that exploit them, we are failing at being good
stewards of God's Creation. Bringing misery to God's animals brings
misery to humanity as well.
4. Bible Verse
(RSV) Micah 6:8
"He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD
require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk
humbly with your God?"
We are called to show justice and kindness to all creatures. By doing
this, we are showing obedience to God; and therefore, following Jesus'
teachings of compassion, mercy and love.
5. Dolphins Almost as Intelligent as Humans
Scientists who study dolphins are recommending they are given the
same status as humans because of their intelligence, considered the
world's second brightest creatures after humans. Scientists claim it is
cruel to keep such intelligent animals in amusement parks, or to kill
them for food or by accident when fishing. Some 300,000 whales, dolphins
and porpoises die in this way every year.

Dolphins are almost as clever as humans - so treat
them like people, say scientists
One industry that exploits dolphins with no regard to their suffering
is the fishing industry. Not only because they are intelligent, but also
because dolphins are simply God's creatures, we need to do everything we
can to stop their victimization. Transitioning to a plant-based diet in
one way to help these creatures.
