1. Australia’s Effort to Stop Whaling
Whaling is set to begin in a few weeks, and Australian authorities
are adamant about stopping Japan in their cull of whales. Australian
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said, "We don't accept Japan's premise of
so-called scientific whaling,"... "We, if we cannot resolve this matter
diplomatically, will take international legal action. I'm serious about
it, I would prefer to deal with it diplomatically, but if we cannot get
there, that's the alternative course of action."

Challenge
How barbaric is our treatment of whales, God’s majestic creatures.
Only when we extend our circle of compassion to all creatures we’ll
deserve our sacred responsibility and privilege to be stewards of God’s
Creation.
2. Famous Quote
“Animals are such agreeable friends - they ask no questions, they
pass no criticisms.”
~ George Eliot, English novelist (1819 - 1880)
3. Mark Twain Animal Advocate
Scholar Shelley Fisher Fishkin is a Stanford Professor and Leading
Mark Twain Scholar. In her new book entitled Mark Twain’s Book
of Animals, Fishkin suggests that Mark Twain was the most prominent
American of his day to raise awareness of animal cruelty. According to
Fishkin Twain grew increasingly disappointed with his fellow human
beings for a broad range of reasons including their treatment of
animals.

4. Bible Verse
(RSV) Hosea 6:6
For I desire steadfast love and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God,
rather than burnt offerings.
God is clear with us that love is of outmost importance in order to
Honor our Creator. Without love, all our sacrifices and faith are
shallow and meaningless.
5. Compassion to All Animals
Vesanto Melina, a registered dietitian and author of a number of
nutrition classics, including Becoming Vegetarian, Becoming Vegan,
Raising Vegetarian Children and the Food Allergy Survival Guide,
writes about the ethical aspects surrounding animal-eating. She is
confused at the apparent love of many people for their pets, who at the
same time show complete disregard to the animals on their plate. Melina
nicely highlights the benefits of a plant-based diet for our health and
challenges the reader to look at all animals with the same moral
compass.

6. Victor Schonfeld’s Suggestions to Improve the
Animal Advocacy Movement
Victor Schonfeld, a film writer, director and producer based in
London, writes about the flaws he sees in the animal activism realm. His
disapproval of ads with naked women and the promotion of "happy" or
"sustainable" meat, among other things, makes Schonfeld hopeful that the
change resides on the individual level and not so much on the masses of
activists.
