1. Why Is Chicken So Cheap?
When a whole rotisserie chicken at Harris-Teeter costs about the same
price as two bunches of carrots, we should ask ourselves: "How is that
possible?" Chickens, our health and the environment pay the price for
the low price of chickens in the US. Ezra Klein, for the Washington
Post, says: "... I sort of wonder how long we'll allow chicken producers
to compete on low prices derived from incredible cruelty to animals,
exploitation of illegal workers, and taxpayer subsidies to the corn
industry. It's a pretty ugly scene, and the product eventually ends up
on our plates."

The Low Cost of Chickens
The Bible tells us that cruelty to God’s animals is forbidden and
that we are called to be compassionate and merciful; however, chickens
are one of the most abused farmed animals and still we continue to
support such industry. Unless we take a stand for what is right, we will
see no peace in God’s Creation.
2. Famous Quote
“The human spirit is not dead. It lives on
in secret.... It has come to believe that compassion, in which all
ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it
embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind.”
~ Albert Schweitzer, Novel Peace Prize address, "The Problem of Peace in
the World Today"
3. Controversial Ag. Bills in Michigan
Two controversial bills were passed earlier this month by the House
Agriculture Committee in Michigan. H.B. 5127 and H.B. 5128, which deal
with comprehensive standards for farm animal care, are supported by
Michigan Farm Bureau and 13 other agriculture groups and opposed by the
Humane Society of the United States among others. H.B. 5128 would put
into law voluntary industry guidelines for farm animals’ care, ranging
from how much living space they need to slaughter practices.

4. Bible Verse
2 Corinthians 7:1
"Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from
every defilement of body and spirit, and make holiness perfect in the
fear of God.” We live in a fallen world where temptations and desires
drive us away from God. However, we are called to emulate Jesus'
teachings and thereby reflect God's love onto all Creation.
5. Six Year-Old Child is Vegetarian for the Love
of Animals
Brooke English, a 6 year-old girl, gave up eating meat when she was 4
because she loves animals. Although her mother eats meat, she's very
supportive of her daughter's diet and agrees that Brooke is "... 100
percent right."

a thing or two
It is often children who teach us very valuable lessons, like the
love for God's animals. It is kids also that society hasn't corrupted
just yet, and their hearts and souls still embrace an innate sense of
justice and compassion that so many adults lost. Let's try to be good
role models for our children; and therefore, be good stewards of God's
Creation.
6. Australians Favor Cage-Free Eggs
With Woolworths, the Australian supermarket giant chain, shifting to
free-range eggs by almost half of the egg brands it sells, it is
expected to speed up a consumer-driven switch to free-range and
barn-laid eggs. Woolworths' fresh food general manager Michael Batycki
said, "As demand for free-range and barn-laid increases, through the
economies of scale we should see a greater level of affordability."

While it’s not necessary to eat eggs in order to have a healthy,
well-balanced diet, the shifting to cage-free eggs is a positive move to
reduce the suffering of egg-laying hens. However, consumers should be
aware that the “cage-free” term does not necessarily mean “cruelty-free”
or that these hens are able to exercise their God-given instincts. At
the end, all egg-laying hens end up slaughtered.
