1. Avian Flu in Tyson
Chickens: Tyson Foods slaughtered and buried 15,000 hens after
some of their hens tested positive for avian flu in Arkansas. So far,
authorities have not ordered any recalls of Tyson products although
officials at the Centers for Disease Control said a 2004 outbreak of the
same virus at a Canadian poultry plant made two people sick.

Toxic Tide: According to scientists the fall in cod stocks in
the Baltic Sea in recent decades increased numbers of algal blooms,
known as "toxic tides", which can be poisonous to people, fish and other
wildlife, and may be on the increase worldwide.

Farming: The New York Times' editorial on May 31 titled "The
Worst Way of Farming" exposes the reality behind factory farming where
millions of animals are crowded together in inhumane conditions, causing
significant environmental threats and unacceptable health risks for
workers, their neighbors and the rest of us. The reports by the Pew
Charitable Trusts and the Union of Concerned Scientists recommend new
regulations such us a phasing-out of confinement systems, a ban on
antibiotics used only to promote animal growth and strict pollution
regulation.
