1. Chicago's Two-Year Ban On Foie Gras Lifted:
Gourmets in Chicago can once again order foie gras after the city
council repealed a two-year restaurant ban. Supporters of the ban point
to the cruelty involved in producing it, which involves force-feeding
geese and ducks under extreme confinement in order to enlarge their
livers.
It is unfortunate to hear that small steps taken toward alleviating
the suffering of God’s animals are once again revoked. The suffering
inflicted on ducks and geese in order to produce foie gras is undeniable
and inexcusable. Since the law doesn’t prevent such cruelty it is up to
the consumer not to support such industry.
2. Famous Quote: "There
are probably no creatures that require more the protective Divine word
against the presumption of man than the animals, which like man have
sensations and instincts, but whose body and powers are nevertheless
subservient to man. In relation to them man so easily forgets that
injured animal muscle twitches just like human muscle, that the
maltreated nerves of an animal sicken like human nerves, that the animal
being is just as sensitive to cuts, blows, and beating as man. Thus man
becomes the torturer of the animal soul." ~ Rabbi Samson Rafael
Hirsch (1808 - 1888), father of German Jewish orthodoxy, Chief Rabbi of
Austria, Horeb, Chapter 60, Section 415.
3. Iceland Resumes Whaling: The temporary halt
to whaling has reached an end in Iceland and the government said it
would allow 40 minke whales to be hunted, which has angered
conservationists and animal advocates. "We hope that we will finish the
40-whale quota in the beginning of July if the market responds well to
the meat, as we believe it will," said Gunnar Bergmann Jonsson, head of
a minke whaling association.
It is sad to see whales, God's animals, chased and hunted in a
barbaric way for the sole purpose of selling their meat. Supporting this
industry only perpetrates the practice of whaling, which certainly does
not show compassion and mercy to these animals.
4. (RSV) Galatians 5:13
“For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your
freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of
one another.”
Free will is a wonderful gift when it's coupled with responsibility,
compassion and mercy. We are called to make choices that glorify God and
help us be good stewards of God's Creation.
5. Vegan Lifestyle: While for a lot of people,
especially the misinformed ones, the word vegan is associated with
extremism and a hippie lifestyle, the reality of being vegan is very
different. Veganism equates with compassion, not only for animals but
also humans and the environment. Vegans forgo eating animal products and
they do their best to lessen suffering and their footprint on earth by
wearing “ecological” clothing and using cruelty-free products.
