1. New Human Bird Flu Victim in Egypt: The
state news agency MENA confirmed the death of a woman of bird flu this
month, making it the 22nd fatality and the 49th case of the disease
among humans in Egypt. The Ministry of Health said she fell ill with the
virus after coming into contact with sick domestic birds.
The way we irresponsibly manipulate the environment and God’s
creatures for our benefit has brought grave consequences to us. In this
case, the intense confinement and stress to which poultry is subjected
fosters the spread of the bird flu virus. A plant-based diet helps us to
restore harmony and balance in God’s Creation.
2. "Recognize meat for what it really is: the
antibiotic- and pesticide-laden corpse of a tortured animal." ~
Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA
3. Two Human Victims of Mad Cow Disease: The
health department of the regional Castilla-Leon government in Spain
announced that two people have died from variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob
Disease, the human form of mad cow disease. Juan Jose Badiola, director
for Spain's National Reference Centre for Transmitted Spongiform
Encephalopathy, said there was no cause for alarm since most likely the
victims contracted the disease more than eight years ago. The European
Union in January 2001 banned the use of animal and bone meal in animal
feed in order to prevent the spread of mad cow disease and vCJD.

Exploiting God's animals for profit and taste has brought grave
consequences for human health. The animal agriculture industry has many
times resorted to practices, such as feeding animals to animals, making
them cannibalistic, in order to increase profit and minimize cost. These
practices however, have come to a high price for humans and animals,
reflecting little respect for God's Creation.
4. (RSV) Romans 13:8
"Owe no one
anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has
fulfilled the law."
God's will is for us to reflect His/Her love onto all creatures, our
neighbors, whom we share this planet with. When we show love, we show
obedience to God.
5. Two More Cases of Human Bird Flu in Indonesia:
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) two more people have
fallen victims of the H5N1 strain of bird flu, an 11 year-old female and
a 15-year-old male, both Indonesians.

Unfortunately, it seems that the exploitation of poultry due to
humanity’s quest for profit and pleasure might be the cause of the bird
flu. In today’s poultry farms, birds are so confined that the virus can
spread easily among one another. Causing misery to God’s animals brings
misery to us as well. The transition to a plant-based diet helps reduce
the number of farmed animals, their suffering, as well as helping stop
the spread of this dreaded virus.
6. Animal Victimization: Wayne Pacelle,
president of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), writes a
compelling article exposing the dangers of animal victimization for our
society. He mentions the abuse of cows at slaughterhouses as a health
risk for consumers and also the so-called "entertainment" victimization
of cock and dog fighting, where there's a relationship to violent
felons.
The way we treat God's animals has consequences on all Creation,
including ourselves. The more love, compassion and mercy we show to
them, the healthier and more harmonious life on Earth will be.
