1. Decrepit Factory Farms: Michael Pollan,
author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals
(2006), wrote an article published in The New York Times Magazine
entitled “Our Decrepit Food Factories”, where he exposes the appalling
conditions in factory farms where animals are so stressed out and their
immune systems so compromised that they cannot survive without
antibiotics.
This over-use of antibiotics raises concern about the
antibiotic-resistant strain of Staphylococcus (“staph”) bacteria, MRSA,
said to be killing more Americans each year than AIDS (100,000
infections and 19,000 deaths in 2005). According to Pollan, examples
like this, "...may point to an imminent breakdown in the way we’re
growing food today."

2. “In my own life, I decided to leave meat
off my plate in medical school, but was a bit slow to realize that dairy
products and eggs are not health foods either.” ~ Neal Barnard,
American physician, author, clinical researcher, and founding president
of the
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM)
3. Nutrition and Violence: According to
several new studies it seems that our modern diets rich in sugars,
saturated fats and refined carbohydrates, may indeed make people more
violent. In fact, some evidence shows that nutrition is a better
predictor a violent behavior than past behavior. The following article
summarizes these findings and emphasizes on the importance of eating a
balanced diet rich in plant-based foods:
You do what you eat
4. (RSV) Galatians 6:7-8 "Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for
whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his own
flesh will from the flesh reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit
will from the Spirit reap eternal life."
We cannot get away from the seeds we sow. Violence perpetrates
violence, and love perpetrates love. When we reflect God's love,
compassion and mercy, we are reaping eternal life.
5. Did You Know These Products Are Vegan? PETA has put together an
extensive list of Vegan products (although not advertised as such),
which can be found at regular grocery stores. Browse through the 8
categories to find your favorite products: breakfast (dry), beverages,
snacks, condiments, bake goods, refrigerated and frozen products,
baking, and staples. Don't forget to share this information with friends
and family!!
I Can't Believe It's Vegan!
6. More Vegetarian Alternatives in Institutions: In the last several
years, institutions like prisons, colleges and ballparks are offering
vegetarian entrees as alternatives to animal-based foods, which shows an
increasing awareness about the benefits of a plant-based diet. Health
professionals agree that vegetarian options are usually lower in
saturated fat, calories and cholesterol. In fact, although some
vegetarian alternatives are a little more expensive that their
meat-based counterparts, the benefits in the long run can be seen in
health care savings due to numerous health benefits of adopting a
plant-based diet. To read the full article please visit
