1. Faith
and Animal Welfare: The
protection of all of God's creatures is finding some acceptance in the
religious arena. Although the animal activist movement is usually seen
as a secular and liberal cause, animal activists are reaching sectors
throughout the political, social and spiritual spectrum.
According to Christine
Gutleben, who directs the new "animals and religion" program at the
Humane Society of the United States, the evangelical community "is
expanding its definition of values to include work on poverty and the
environment. We hope to insert concern for animal welfare as well."

Although animal welfare
is not in the center of the spiritual radar, there has been some
progress that focuses on extending our circle of compassion beyond
humanity, to all of God’s creatures. Hopefully, more people of faith
will realize the importance of being good stewards of God’s animals, and
reflecting God’s love for all Creation.
2.
"It is certainly not lions and wolves that we eat out of
self-defense; on the contrary, we ignore these and slaughter harmless,
tame creatures without stings or teeth to harm us, creatures that, I
swear, Nature appears to have produced for the sake of their beauty and
grace. But nothing abashed us, not the flower-like tinting of the flesh,
not the persuasiveness of the harmonious voice, not the cleanliness of
their habits or the unusual intelligence that may be found in the poor
wretches. No, for the sake of a little flesh we deprive them of sun, of
light, of the duration of life to which they are entitled by birth and
being."
~ Plutarch (46-120 A.D.), Greek historian, biographer, and
essayist.
3. Living Donkey
Ad: A sad scene can
be observed on a Beijing street where a mangy donkey tied to a post all
day wears an advertisement for a donkey meat shop run by his owner. The
donkey is left on its own surrounded by its own manure. Although the
"ad" has caused controversy, it has done so because some people worry
about it's not hygienic, and that it may affect the city's image.

How tragic to exploit
one of God's animals for the sole purpose to bring profit. This shows
disrespect and disobedience to God and His/Her Creation, because it does
not accord with God's principles of love, compassion and peace.
4. (RSV) Psalm
1:1-2
"Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor
stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his
delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and
night."
God calls us to
obedience and to follow Jesus' teachings of compassion, love and peace.
In the midst of a fallen world, we should strive to reflect God's love
for all Creation.
5. Compassionate Presidential Contender:
The two-time Democratic presidential contender Rep. Dennis
Kucinich, D-Ohio, is a compassionate vegan, who cares about animals,
health and the environment. Therefore, he and his wife are focusing on
fund-raising events that do not include any animal products as an
example for what they stand.

The world would be a
much better place if more leaders in all arenas (political, spiritual,
financial, etc.) would stand up for compassion to all creatures and
promote a non-violent lifestyle that is very much needed in our
violence-plagued world.
6. Lobsters Do
Feel Pain:
A long and heated
debate between animal advocates, scientists, chefs and others might be
coming to an end. A new study published in New Scientist this month,
conducted by Robert Elwood, an expert in animal behavior at Queen's
University, Belfast, showed that crustaceans feel pain. The study
involved daubing acetic acid on to the antennae of 144 prawns to which
in turn began grooming and rubbing the affected antenna, while leaving
untouched ones alone. According to Prof. Elwood this response is
"consistent with an interpretation of pain experience".
