Battery Farm
Owner
Fined:
Trevor
Chin and Wellington Farms in
New Zealand, have
pleaded guilty to animal welfare charges relating to the care of 28,000
birds.
The hens on the
Wellington egg farm were left to die with their heads stuck through the
bars of their cages while other birds, caged with rotting carcasses,
sometimes pecked on the remains.
The judge, Gregory
Ross, who ordered
Chin to do 400 hours community work and pay $1200 in solicitor's fees and
$6000 toward the costs of the prosecution, said he could not understand
how Chin and his
staff were able to pass without helping the birds with their heads
trapped so that they could not reach food or water.
Chin won't be able to own or have custody of any birds for 10 years.

Causing suffering to any creature shows our hardness of heart. Animals,
part of God's
Creation, deserve to be treated with compassion and mercy. As long as
God's animals are exploited, humanity will continue to reap the
consequences.

"If the use of animal food be, in consequence, subversive to the peace
of human society, how unwarrantable is the injustice and the barbarity
which is exercised toward these miserable victims. They are called into
existence by human artifice that they may drag out a short and miserable
existence of slavery and disease, that their bodies may be mutilated,
their social feelings outraged. It were much better that a sentient
being should never have existed, than that it should have existed only
to endure unmitigated misery."
~ Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792 - 1822), English poet, quote from Queen
Mab Notes
3. Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. Focus on Animal
Welfare:
PETA announced last
month that Hardee's and
Carl's Jr. fast-food chains will begin purchasing eggs and pork from
suppliers who do not keep animals in cages or crates. The company has
agreed to the following by July 1, 2008: obtain 15% of the pig meat it
buys from suppliers that don’t use gestation crates, increase the amount
to 25% by 2009; have 2% of the eggs it uses be from hens that are not
housed in battery cages; and inform poultry suppliers that it will give
consideration to those who actively explore and test controlled-animal
stunning systems.
CKE will also use a 3rd
party auditor to ensure the changes have occurred.

It's good news for
God's Creation every time an industry takes a step toward
alleviating animal suffering. Let's hope that the improvement continues
and one day God's animals can be free of human exploitation.
4. (RSV) Psalm 40:8
"I delight to do thy will,
O my God; thy law is within my heart."
When our desires focus
on God, we find joy in being obedient to Him/Her, while living in the
midst of a fallen world.
5. Australian Fine Wool Source of Controversy:
The Royal Society for the Protection of Animals (RSPCA)
in Australia is calling for the practice of "battery sheep" to end.
These sheep are raised under intense confinement in individual pens to
protect their wool; and therefore, deprived of natural grazing behavior
and social interaction. Consequently, they show abnormal behaviors such
as swaying and chewing wood and wire enclosures. The ultra-fine wool
sells for more than 100 times the price of regular wool.

Whether God's animals
are exploited for their flesh and/or fur, the fact that they undergo
pain and suffering is undeniable. We are called to be compassionate and
merciful to all creatures, and in that way reflect God's love for all
Creation.

Japan Prepares for Whale Hunting:
While
Japan prepares for hunting 50 humpback whales in the Antarctic over the
coming southern hemisphere summer and 935 minke whales for scientific
research, the environmental group Greenpeace is satellite tracking 19
humpback whales as they travel from the South Pacific back to Antarctic
waters this whaling season, to prove Japan does not need to kill whales
to study them. In addition, Greenpeace is collecting skin samples to
sequence DNA of every whale they encounter. "We do not have to kill the
whales for any of the research we are doing. We do not even have to hurt
them," said Greenpeace whale researcher Nan Hauser. Those against whale
hunting say that most of the whale meat ends up in Japanese supermarkets
and restaurants and that Japan rarely publishes its scientific findings.

Whales, magnificent
animals, are exploited for research but mostly food. As long as there is
a market for their meat, the brutal hunt for whales will continue. As
Christians, we need to take a stand and defend God's animals too often
victimized; transitioning to a plant-based diet makes a strong statement
for God's Creation.
