3. More
Cattle Slaughtered Due
to Foot and Mouth Disease:
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Britain's farm
ministry has ordered the slaughter of cattle on a farm in Surrey on suspicion of foot and mouth disease. The seventh positive
test was confirmed on Oct 1. The outbreaks of foot-and-mouth and
bluetongue led to an EU ban on British exports of fresh meat, live
animals and dairy products, causing an estimated damage of tens of
millions of pounds.
The intense confinement and suffering to which God’s animals
are subjected in today’s factory farms has led to the increase of
disease transmission. We cannot expect that our poor management of God’s
animals and resources has no negative effects. As long as the demand for
animal flesh continues, we will continue to deal with the results of
exploiting God’s animals for taste and profit.
4. Galatians 6:2
"Carry each
other's burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."
God reminds us to be compassionate and to reach out to those
who are burdened and discouraged, just as Christ teaches us.
5. Vegan Diet Helps with Weight Loss:A new study in the September’s issue of Obesity
magazine shows that a vegan diet helps people lose more weight and keep
it off more effectively than a more conventional low-fat diet that
includes meat and dairy products. Social support in the form of group
meetings was also associated with greater sustained weight loss,
according to the study’s authors, who include health experts with the
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM).
We are called to be good stewards of our bodies, temples of
the Holy Spirit. A plant-based diet helps us take care of our bodies,
the environment and God’s animals.
6. Topps Meat
Co. Goes out of
Business:Topps Meat Co. announced this month that it's going out of
business, just a few days after they issued the second-largest beef
recall in U.S.
history. The recall 21.7 million pounds recall of ground beef might have
been contaminated with the E. coli bacteria strain O157:H7. These bacteria are found in the intestines of cattle,
and improper butchering and processing can cause the E. coli to get onto
meat. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
thirty people in eight states had E. coli infections matching the strain
found in the Topps patties and fortunately there have been no human
fatalities.
The Topps Meat Co. recall is just one
more in the extensive list of recalls in the meat industry. The way we
raise and slaughter animals is conducive to disease transmittal and food
contamination. The transition to a plant-based diet can help us protect
our health, the environment and God’s animals.
