1. Ramifications of the Vick
Dogfighting
Case Worries Farmers:
Vick cruelty to dogs has transpired into much more: exposing the cruelty
inflicted, legally, on animals for the sake of profit and taste. Give
the media attention given to Vick's case, animal advocacy groups have
the chance to express their concern for other creatures as well, besides
dogs, which ultimately touches every American who still feeds on animal
flesh. Farmers are worried because people are getting informed about the
inherent cruelty of factory farming, which might drive people to buy
more plant-based foods.

2.
"God, who in creating saw that His creation was good, is the source of
joy for all creatures, and above all for humankind. God the
Creator seems to
say of all creation: 'It is good that you exist.' And His joy spreads
especially through the 'good news,' according to which good is greater
than all that is evil in the world,,,, Creation was given and entrusted to humankind as a duty, representing not
a source of suffering but the foundation of a creative existence in the
world."
~ Pope John Paul II (1920 - 2005), from
Crossing the Threshold of Hope
3. Misleading Animal Husbandry Terms:
At a Turkey Meeting sponsored by the Arkansas Poultry Federation this
month, Timothy Cummings, a clinical professor and poultry veterinarian
at Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss., suggested that the
poultry industry should use different terminology such as "beak
conditioning" instead of "debeaking", “backup killer” for “knife
operator”, and “bled to death” for “exsanguinated.” Cummings proposes
these changes to counteract the power that animal advocates groups have.

Control debate, growers advised
The reluctance of the meat industry to use the correct terms
when mutilating and slaughtering animals only shows their callousness
toward animals and lack of respect to consumers who end up being
deceived; therefore, it is up to the consumer not to support an industry
that shows no integrity. A plant-based diet is a compassionate choice
that shows respect to God’s
Creation.
4.
(RSV) Psalm 63:1
"O God, thou art
my God, I seek thee, my soul thirsts for thee; my flesh faints for thee,
as in a dry and weary land where no water is."
Our souls' hunger
should drive us to seek God and not earthly desires. When we seek God,
we find fulfillment and we are better enabled to reflect His/Her love
onto all Creation.
5. Controversial
Buffalo Hunt Began:
This
month, hunters began tracking and killing buffalo on the National Elk
Refuge in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, causing controversy among the public
opinion. The hunt is supposed to reduce the herd from 1,200 to 500 over
the next five years, and according to animal advocate groups, hunting
these animals cannot be considered a sport since they are so accustomed
to humans. "Hunting these bison is like hunting parked cars," said
Jonathan Lovvorn, a vice president of the US Humane Society and attorney
with the Fund for Animals.

6. Cut out Caviar to Save the Sturgeon:
Because of overfishing, poaching, pollution and poor management the
sturgeon stocks in the Caspian Sea are dangerously low. It is believed
that unless the consumption for their eggs (caviar) diminishes, the
sturgeon might face extinction in the near future. Similarly, Beluga,
whose eggs are a symbol of ostentatious dining and luxury, are at the
verge of extinction after fish numbers fell by 90 percent over the past
20 years.

So many of God's animal species are facing extinction due to
the greed of humanity and its hunger for profit and pleasure. Unless we
start managing God's Creation lovingly and responsibly, we will continue
to bring misery to it.
