1. Dealing with
Animal Manure: Who is responsible
for dealing with the manure generated in factory farms is subject of
heated debate. Since animal manure from large farms can end up
contaminating water and soil, some think farmers should be held
responsible. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, there are 19,000
concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). About 30 groups, including
attorneys general from eight states, local officials and environmental groups,
oppose an exemption for large farms that emit huge
amounts of manure that can contain ammonia, bacteria, particulate matter
and metals such as copper and arsenic.

Factory farming raises animals in overcrowded environments and extreme
confinement. Billions of animals are slaughtered every year for their flesh, and the manure they produce has become a serious
environmental problem. The fastest and most effective way to reduce the
amount of manure generated is to transition to a plant-base diet, which
honors God by showing respect and love for Creation.
2. “Veganism denotes a
philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as possible
and practical, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for
food, clothing, or any other purpose; and by extension promotes the
development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of
humans, animals, and the environment.”
~ Donald Watson (1910 – 2005), coined the term “vegan”
3. OFE’s Permit
Revocation Reversed:
The
Ohio Department of Agriculture
reversed the revocation they issued of the operating permits for Ohio
Fresh Eggs (OFE), Ohio’s largest egg producer,
which had taken over the 14-million-hen Buckeye Egg Farm in 2004. Since
October 2004, OFE has been cited 15 times, mostly for manure problems, such as neighbors
complaining about fly and rodent infestations. The state revoked the
permits last November on the basis that
OFE did not disclose that a former owner and “habitual violator” of environmental laws was still involved in the company’s daily
operations. On August 23rd, an
environmental appeals panel said the state hadn’t proved that the
company obtained the permits by misleading officials.

Confining millions of God’s animals in overcrowded environments denies
them their God-given rights. As long as we keep exploiting other
creatures, humanity will continue facing growing environmental and
health problems related to animal agriculture.
4. Psalm 121:1-2
“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From whence does my help come? My help
comes from the LORD, who
made heaven and earth.”
Whenever we feel
low, defeated, in sorrow… we should remember that God, our Creator, helps us and surrounds us with love.
5. Eco-friendly Youth Rally Led by Pope Benedict: On the day the Catholic Church marks its annual Save Creation Day, Pope Benedict addressed a crowd of approx. 300,000 people
and encouraged them to take action to save the planet. He said, “Courageous choices that can re-create a strong alliance between men and
earth must be made before it’s too late.”

Transitioning to
a plant-based diet would help restore the environment, given that this
diet makes use of fewer resources, contributes to reduce green house
gases, reduces soil and water contamination, as well as the use of
hormones and antibiotics in farmed animals. Church leaders should
encourage their followers to adopt a vegetarian diet as a way to help
the planet.
6. Global Warming and Decrease in Polar Bear
Numbers: The US Geological Survey reported this month
that if the prediction of melting ice is accurate, humanity will witness
the vanishing of 1/3 of the polar bears by 2050. "Other polar bear populations could survive beyond that date but many of
those could be gone by 2100", said Amstrup, who led the research team.

Animal
agriculture contributes to 18% of global warming gases emission. One way to decrease this would be to adopt a plant-based diet.
