1. Firefighter Foam Used to Kill Poultry: Last month, 15,000
turkeys in West Virginia thought to be infected with the highly
pathogenic avian influenza virus, H5N2, were exterminated with
firefighting foam. Poultry scientist, Dr. Ian Duncan, of the University
of Guelph, in Ontario, called the foam “a
horribly inhumane way to kill birds". The foam is intended to obstruct
birds’ upper respiratory tract including the trachea, and should result
in the death of 95 percent of the birds within seven minutes, and 100
percent of the flock within 15 minutes of submergence.

Calling a slow,
painful, and terrifying death “humane” shows no respect for God’s
animals, and certainly it doesn’t reflect God’s love toward all
creatures. Turkeys already live a miserable life under extreme confined
and stressful conditions, and are not even spared a horrible death. We
should all consider that God’s animals also feel pain and fear. Showing
compassion and love to them reflects our obedience to God in being good
stewards of Creation.
2. "When we sit
down to eat, when we say our grace and invoke the blessing of Jesus, we
should also choose to adhere to his life of compassion and nonviolence
by maintaining a vegetarian diet."
~ Fr. John Dear, Jesuit priest, peace activist, lecturer,
and writer of approximately twenty books on nonviolence, including
Living Peace.
3. Slaughter of
Horses in Illinois banned:
Yesterday, May 24, Governor Rod R. Blagojevich signed legislation that
bans the slaughter of horses in Illinois for human consumption. Gov.
Blagojevich stated, “It’s past time to stop slaughtering horses in
Illinois and sending their meat overseas. I’m proud to sign this law
that finally puts an end to this practice.”

Illinois for human consumption
It's good news
for God's Creation every time humanity takes a step toward a loving,
compassionate and harmonious world. The brutal slaughter of horses came
to an end in the state of Illinois thanks to the pressure of animal
advocate groups and compassionate consumers. Hopefully, more people will
realize that the killing of a cow, a pig or a chicken is no different
than the killing of a horse. All of God's animals deserve to live a life
free from human exploitation. A plant-based diet is a powerful witness
to Christ's love, compassion and peace.
4. (RSV)
Matthew 5:7: "Blessed
are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy."
God calls us to
be merciful and compassionate toward all Creation. A plant-based diet is
one way to show mercy to animals raised for food.
5. Cruelty Case at North Carolina Turkey
Slaughterplant: An
undercover video released by Mercy for Animals, shows workers at House
of Raeford Farms, Inc., a turkey slaughtering facility, hitting and
mutilating live turkeys during the process of killing and butchering the
birds. Mercy for Animals is seeking felony cruelty-to-animals charges
against House of Raeford Farms, Inc. for violating
North Carolina animal cruelty statutes.

Unfortunately,
this case is far too common on today's factory farms and
slaughterhouses, where animals suffer unimaginable pain and fear. As
God's children, we are called to be good stewards of all Creation, which
entails showing compassion and love for God's animals. A powerful
witness to Christ's teachings is the transition to a plant-based diet.
6. Japan Loses
Whale Bid:
Once again, Japan efforts to
re-open whale meat trade, have been rebuffed, this time by the
Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), whose
delegates rejected Japan's proposal by an overwhelming majority. "It's
high time they accepted that commercial whale trade has no place in the
modern world", said Carroll Muffett, deputy campaigns director at
Greenpeace.

The ban on whale
meat trade honors God's Creation. These majestic creatures suffer
unimaginable stress, fear and pain in the hands of whale hunters. By
showing compassion to all of God's animals, we reflect God's love for
them and for the rest of Creation.
