1.
Dairy Council to End Ad Campaign: A national advertising
campaign carried by the dairy industry that links weight loss with dairy
intake will be curtailed by the Federal Trade Commission because
research does not support the claim. The Physicians Committee for
Responsible Medicine is one of the groups that contested the dairy
industry claims. Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York
University, claimed that “Those ads were ridiculously misleading.”

3. New
Attitude toward “Mock” Meats: Mock meats, imitation
of meat products, are gaining momentum in the US. It’s more and more
common to find "veggie burgers," "riblets," "Smart Dogs" and "meatless
skewers" on a household grill. The reason seems to be the growing
interest in vegetarianism, for health and moral/ethical purposes.
According to The Soyfoods Association of North America, sales of meat
alternatives reached $547 million in 2004 — up $17 million from 2002.

4. (RSV) James
3:17-18 "But
the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to
reason, full of mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or
insincerity. And the harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those
who make peace."
Christ's
teachings reflect God's love for all Creation. A love that is
compassionate, gentle and merciful. We honor God by helping restore
peace and harmony in God's Creation.
5. Bird flu
spreading in Bangladesh:
Despite great efforts, bird
flu is spreading among poultry in Bangladesh. The avian virus has been
found in three more farms, close to where bird flu broke out much
earlier. About 77,000 chickens have been culled so far from 30 farms
since March 22 and approximately 600 workers at the infected farms have
been given a local version of the Tamiflu anti-viral drug as a
precaution. The virus is known to have infected nearly 300 people in 12
countries since 2003, killing more than half of them. There’s a lot of
concern for the Bangladesh economy since about four million of its
inhabitants are directly or indirectly associated with poultry farming.
We might be
getting closer than we think to a pandemic that could affect millions of
people. The intense confinement of poultry in industrial farms makes
the avian virus transmission easier. The transition to a plant-based
diet would help reduce the number of poultry in farms and therefore
would alleviate human and animal suffering.

Response to ignorant attack:
Many of you might recall the devastating news of the death of
an infant (raised vegan by his parents) and the attention it caught from
the media and the public opinion. In fact, what caught the attention of
many was the irresponsible and ignorant attack by Ms. Nina Planck, with
her article
Death by Veganism published in the New York Times on May 21, 2007.
Fortunately, the article prompted thousands of letters, and here are the
ones that the New York Times published
The Vegans and their Children
