1. Methane Emission by Animal Agriculture:
Methane, a global warming
gas, is largely produced by industrial agriculture. Environmentalists
are trying to bring the attention to this gas emission since this gas is
23 times more potent than carbon dioxide in trapping heat in the
atmosphere.
According to the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, just in the US cattle emit about
5.5 million tons of methane per year into the atmosphere, accounting for
20 percent of US methane emissions. Stephan Singer, head of WWF's
European Energy and Climate Policy Unit, said "What worries me is the
increased methane coming out of the stomachs of ruminants, mainly for
increased beef consumption within an increasingly wealthy world. The
diet of the West has a big impact on the atmosphere."

3. Pollution
Locator: The
enormous quantities of animal waste that factory farms produce every
year in the US, almost two trillion pounds, pollute our soil and water.
To find out the
extent of pollution in your state visit

can also read the latest animal waste report and learn about how you can
take action and help protect humans, animals and the environment.
As Christians, we
are called to be good stewards of all of God’s Creation. Contaminating
the environment, destroying our health and causing suffering to animals
do not honor God, and do not show obedience to our Creator. The
transition to a plant-based diet shows love and compassion to all
creatures, and helps to restore our health and the environment.
4. (RSV) James
3:17-18:
"But the wisdom from
above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of
mercy and good fruits, without uncertainty or insincerity. And the
harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace."
Christ's
teachings reflect God's love for all Creation. A love that is
compassionate, gentle and merciful. We honor God by helping restore
peace and harmony in God's Creation.
5. Questionable
agricultural practices in China:
Among the agricultural
practices found questionable in China such as flooding produce with
unapproved pesticides, pumping livestock with antibiotics banned in the
United States, and using human feces as fertilizer to boost soil
productivity, one of the more concerning ones is the practice of
frequently suspending chickens pens over ponds where seafood is raised,
recycling chicken waste as a food source for seafood. According to
Representative Rosa DeLauro, who is fighting the import of such products
to the US, said "They need to hear from us they're at risk. Congress has
to look at limiting some of their agricultural imports."

Agricultural
practices in China, and elsewhere in the world, are putting our health
at risk and God’s animals through immense pain and suffering. While some
practices are more questionable than others, the fact that animals are
raised for mass production under extreme confinement should raise a flag
in our hearts and consciences. A transition to a plant-base diet would
help end some of those practices, would help alleviate animal suffering,
and help restore our health and the environment.
6. Deadly Fish
Virus in the Great Lakes:
A deadly Ebola-like virus
has been detected in the Great Lakes, US, and fish of all kinds are
dying. According to experts the VHS might be the most important and
dangerous fish virus known worldwide and its discovery in the US fresh
water is disturbing and potentially catastrophic. The United States and
Canada try to contain the virus by restricting the transporting of fish
and live bait and telling boaters to wash their boats when moving them
between lakes.
