1. Impact of animal agriculture on the
environment: A 2006 report by the Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO) highlights the major negative
effects of livestock on the environment, such us deforestation,
greenhouse gases, land degradation, pollution, and biodiversity loss.
Some of the FAO’s recommendations to mitigate livestock's threats to the
environment are restoration of damaged land, sustainable intensification
of livestock and feed crop production to reduce carbon dioxide emissions
and better management of animal waste in industrial production units.

The most effective way to restore the health of the environment is
the transition to a plant-based diet since it decreases animal waste,
usage of natural resources, contamination, deforestation, global warming
gasses emission, and the enormous cruelty inflicted on farm animals.
Moreover, it shows good stewardship of our bodies, the temples of the
Holy Spirit.
2.
"Someday we
'rational' humans may finally come to understand that a moment's desire
or delight is a weak, even immoral excuse for making other sentient
creatures suffer."
~ Captive Consequences, The Daily Camera 8/2/04
3. Fat to fuel:
ConocoPhillips, the third-largest U.S. oil company, and
Tyson Foods Inc., the world's biggest meat producer, will joint efforts
in developing diesel fuel from animal fat. Tyson's half of its annual
2.3 billion pounds of animal fat is expected to be used.

It's saddening that the quest for profit leads to ignore the
suffering of billion of animals that are raised for food every year.
Animal agriculture produces massive amounts of animal waste that pollute
our land and water. One fifth of the fossil fuels used in the US go into
raising animals for food. To combine efforts to address the "tip of the
iceberg" while ignoring the short-sighted practices of industrial
agriculture is to contribute to animal suffering and environmental
destruction while deceiving the consumer. The transition to a
plant-based diet helps reduce animal agricultural waste, animal
suffering and helps us take care of our bodies.
4. 1 John 3:16
“By this we know
love, that he laid down his life for us; and we ought to lay down our
lives for the brethren.”
Jesus teaches us to reflect God's love for all Creation and in turn
love our fellow beings with compassion and selflessness.
5. Children bear the consequences of some of our
actions (or lack thereof): According to a new report, 175
million children would be affected every year over the next decade by
climate-related disasters like droughts, floods and storms. Children,
being society's vulnerable members, would be hurt disproportionately and
millions more would be killed, forced from their homes or hit by hunger
and disease.

Sometimes others are affected by the consequences of our actions.
It's especially appalling that children are suffering and will suffer
greatly due to our failing at taking care of God's Creation. Factory
farming contributes to 18% of global warming gasses emissions, to
immense cruelty to animals and to health decline. A plant-based diet
helps as to be good stewards of all of God's Creation: our health,
animals and the environment.
6.
Mega dairy farm pollution: Nearly 20 additional
violations, committed by Wright Township dairy operation, which houses
6,000 cows, were reported since January. The Michigan Department of
Environmental Quality filed a contempt of court action against the dairy
farm for violations of a 2004 agreement regarding prior charges. Angry
and frustrated neighbors complain of health problems (headaches, sinus
problems), waste polluting the soil and water, and the terrible smell
they have to endure.

There is vast evidence that dairy farms greatly pollute our
environment and contribute to a myriad of health problems. The article,
however, doesn't raise the issue of animal suffering and the conditions
the cows and their calves must endure. A plant-based diet helps
alleviate animal suffering, and restore our health and the environment.
