1. Iceland faces boycotts: Last October, Iceland announced their
decision to allow whalers to catch 30 minke whales and nine endangered
fin whales. This resolution faced harsh criticism from the public in
general and international community. The Icelandic Travel Industry
Association presented evidence of cancelled foreign bookings since the
resumption of the hunts. Baugur, owner of UK retailer House of Fraser,
described signs of damage to Icelandic tourism and threats by many
groups to stop trading with foreign companies owned by Icelanders.

Whaling causes tremendous pain and misery to these majestic animals.
It’s good news for God’s Creation when people take a stand against
cruelty and oppose such industries.
2. “We consume the carcasses of creatures of like appetites, passions
and organs with our own, and fill the slaughterhouses daily with screams
of fear and pain.”
~ Robert Louis Stevenson, (1850 – 1894), Scottish
novelist and poet. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and
Treasure Island are among his writings.
3. Pono, the happy Hawaiian cow: This story tell us of the saga of a
vegan young man, Anthony Marasia, who bonded with a steer, Pono,
destined to end up in dinner plates. After many trips to take care of
the steer and feed him, Anthony began a campaign to save Pono on July 1.
Soon after “Pono’s” website was up and running Anthony had raised enough
money to buy and transport Pono to a safe location.

4. (RSV) Galatians 5:16
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and do not
gratify the desires of the flesh.”
We are called to obey God and follow Jesus’ teachings; therefore, we
should do our best to not give into desires that harm ourselves or
others. Showing compassion and love is walking by the Spirit.
5. Escape from fish farms threatens wild populations: About 790,000
salmon and trout escaped from Norwegian fish farms last year becoming a
great threat to wild fish. Farmed fish are carriers of parasites such as
sea lice, which infect wild salmon and other aquatic species. Since
these farm fish escape to rivers, they infect young wild salmon before
they head off to the open sea threatening their immune systems, which
are not yet fully developed. According to Peter Gullestad, Norwegian
Directorate of Fisheries, the low security in fish farms is "a criminal
act that must be sanctioned the same as a hold-up or a rape."

6. The healing power of animals: A study carried out by the Pet Care
Trust Foundation looked into quantifying the physical & psychological
effects of introducing animals to patients in the cardiac intensive care
facility at the UCLA Medical Center.
In 2005, during American Heart
Association Conference in Dallas, TC, the researchers announced the
findings: the UCLA study showed that trained Assistance Therapy dogs,
visiting severely ill cardiac patients in intensive care, lowered their
stress and anxiety and their heart and lung pressure significantly. As
the article says “The scientific “proof” that dogs, and many other well
cared for animals, interacting with children, adults and elders in
hospitals, in long term care, in schoolrooms and in homes, is a
significant benefit for the health of humans, as well as unconditional
love within and for our society”

God created animals to be our companions and helpers. The same
animals considered pets in this part of the world are seen as food in
others. Humanity, throughout time, has used and abused animals for its
own benefit. By reflecting God’s love onto all Creation our relationship
to animals can bring healing and restoration in a broken world.
