Effects of Human Activity on the Environment
Welcome to the weekly CVA blog! In it you will find famous quotes,
news and commentaries.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! May 2007 bring hope, peace, love, compassion and
encouragement to oppose injustice and victimization in God’s Creation.
1. Meat-based diet and global warming
2. Famous quote – John Muir, Naturalist and explorer (1838-1914)
3. Farm animals going extinct
4. Bible verse – Isaiah 24:4-5
5. Chinese river dolphin extinct
6. The effect of global warming on ocean life
1. Meat-based diet and global warming: According to a United Nations
recent report, animal agriculture is responsible for almost 1/5 of the
pollution causing global warming. "Livestock are one of the most
significant contributors to today's most serious environmental problems.
Urgent action is required to remedy the situation," said the FAO's
Henning Steinfeld, the report's senior author.

We might not suffer from our poor stewardship of God’s creation
immediately; however, our children and their children will inherit the
consequences of our irresponsibility and disobedience to God, and might
suffer from great hardships. We have a sacred responsibility and
tremendous privilege to take care of God’s creation, and a plant-based
diet is an essential part of it.
2. “The world, we are told, was made especially for man--a
presumption not supported by all the facts... Why should man value
himself as more than a small part of the one great unit of creation?”
~
John Muir, Naturalist and explorer (1838-1914)
3. Farm animals going extinct: According to a recent United Nations
report, approximately 20% of farm animal breeds have been brought to the
brink of extinction as world agriculture narrows its focus to only the
most productive livestock. It’s believed that one breed is being lost
each month. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) explains that
of more than 7,600 breeds in the FAO's global database of farm animal
genetic resources, 190 have become extinct in the past 15 years and a
further 1,500 are considered at risk of extinction.

Sadly, human activity is causing havoc in God’s creation. The
exploitation of animals for our benefit and pleasure has grave
consequences; in this case, the disappearance of farm animal breeds. God
calls us to live in harmony with all creatures, and to show compassion
and love towards all creation. A transition to a plant-based diet would
allow Creation to flourish.
4. (RSV) Isaiah 24:4-5 “The earth mourns and withers, the world
languishes and withers; the heavens languish together with the earth.
The earth lies polluted under its inhabitants; for they have
transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting
covenant.”
5. Chinese river dolphin extinct: After the expedition to find river
dolphins in China ended last month without even one sighting, scientists
believe that they are extinct. Development, overfishing and shipping are
thought to be the culprits. August Pfluger, chief executive of the
baiji.org Foundation said, "If there are maybe one or two or three left
in the river, we don't believe that they have any chance to survive. We
were obviously too late. For me, it's a tragedy in terms of
conservation. We lost the race."

Sometimes it’s too late for us to realize the damage we are causing
in God’s Creation. Our lifestyle has a great impact on the Earth’s
resources and God’s animals. We are called to witness and reflect the
love of God for all Creation, and a plant-based diet helps us to do so.
6. The effect of global warming on ocean life: A study, published in
the science journal Nature, resulting from a decade-long analysis of the
oceans by NASA's SeaWiFS satellite which measured the changing colors of
the waters caused by changing levels of phytoplankton, sheds light on
the devastating effects global warming has on phytoplankton. These
microscopic plants that live in the surface layer of the oceans are not
only the foundation of the marine food chain, but every day they take
more than 100 million tones of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
According to lead researcher Michael Behrenfeld, “This study shows that
as the climate warms, phytoplankton production goes down, but this also
means that carbon dioxide uptake by ocean plants will decrease ...
making the problem worse."

Human activity has impacted Earth’s complex and fragile ecosystems.
The vast evidence gathered throughout the years should be enough to
compel humanity to relate to God’s creation in a way that honors our
Creator. We might not see the devastating effects of our actions during
our lifetime, but generations to come will suffer from hardships due to
our poor stewardship. Animal agriculture contributes greatly to global
warming but the transition to a plant-base diet can help reduce its
effects.
