Eastside Community Church, a part of the Hill Country Bible Church
Association, in Austin, TX is home to one of the largest Christian vegan and
vegetarian communities in the city including 1 vegan and 1 vegetarian on
staff. Meeting in the heart of East Austin at Mission Possible every Sunday
from 11:00am to 12:30pm, you can look forward to vegan and gluten free
communion elements, coffee creamers, as well as vegan and vegetarian options
at potlucks and special events. Lead Pastor Holland Greig is very welcoming
to vegan and vegetarians, and does everything he can to make them feel
comfortable, welcome and wanted at the church.
ECC practices and believes in Creation Care as a church and in the personal
and social lives of members and attenders. This looks like answering God's
call to stewarding the planet every day by choosing healthier and more
ethical food options and other daily use items, and encouraging recycling
and composting. Creation Care, and reminders of God's care for all created
things, are regularly mentioned in our sermons and classes.
The church has their own community garden, led by Sam Towns, the vegan
pastoral assistant of the church, where they teach church members and
attenders the basics of growing their own vegetables, herbs and fruits so
they can teach others, as well as how to compost. Vegan food grown in the
garden is shared with the church community and those in the community who
are in need whether low income, disabled or homeless.
