American Kennel Club Severs Ties with Dog Breed Club Responsible for 'Bear Baiting'

The United Kennel Club should follow the lead of the American Kennel Club and take immediate action to end its ties to all bear baiting competitions in South Carolina.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has reportedly cut ties with The American Plott Association, the dog breed club responsible for one of the largest bear baiting events in South Carolina.

The events came under intense public scrutiny after The Human Society of the United States (HSUS) released details of its undercover investigation into the bear baiting—or “bear baying” according to participants—competitions.

Apparently the AKC was motivated to act after viewing film footage of those investigations.

Unfortunately though, the United Kennel Club (UKC) has not followed the AKC’s lead. The nation’s second largest dog registry has yet to separate itself from the other major player in the South Carolina bear baiting scene, the National Plott Hound Association.

"The United Kennel Club should follow the lead of the American Kennel Club and take immediate action to end its ties to all bear baiting competitions in South Carolina," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States. "There can be no excuse for this torment and cruelty, and not a single event like this should be staged anywhere again."
